Alex 42157
Classic Daily Mail “In an apparent break from tradition – which may well trigger outrage”. Not like then to stir up something out of nothing Boxing Day falling on a Friday makes it even less of an issue. For actual fans attending games it’s probably much better from a public transport pov etc going on the other days. Rather than if they’d moved all the proposed Saturday fixtures a day forward to maintain this ‘tradition’. Not that the Mail cares about that. As an aside, I find it mental that top flight matches used to be played on Christmas Day.
Craig 12386
It's not that many years ago that we played two games on consecutive days. Wasn't it the 80s when we played a home match and then were away to Watford or somewhere like that the very next day?
Craig 12386
Found it - 1986/87. 5 games in 13 days including 3 away from home. Mental.

But I seem to recall Xmas Eve falling on a Saturday on more than one occasion where you had a full fixture list that day then two days later on Boxing Day.
Craig 12386
I was at that Boxing Day game against Everton. The only time I sat in the old West Stand and can still now hear the thunderous noise of feet being stamped. We were god-damned awful that day. Davey Mc was injured so they debuted Jeff Wrightson who was utterly shit. Everton were a force to be reckoned with that season.

My Grandad - a Preston fan who was one of those who knew someone who knew someone who knew someone who can get him things sorted tickets for us that day. IIRC he knew the club secretary at Derby County who knew Howard Kendall and he used him to get the tickets. Fairly certain we could probably paid on the gate but that was my Grandad - leave this with me, boy.
Craig 12386
BTW re: Howard Kendall he was IIRC one of the 3 managers the club were strongly considering after McFaul (Cox & Hay being the others). We ended up with Jim Smith FFS. 1

ewerk 39247
I’m always at the in laws on Boxing Day and they’ve no interest in football so it’s no loss to me. Saying that, we’re playing Man U in that round of fixtures so we’re odds on to be the match chosen for the Friday.

The Fish 12580
Re: Anderson not getting into our first team. I think we've shown this year that Howe is becoming more and more comfortable using the squad. Some of it is definitely forced (it likely would have been Trippier replacing Livramento, rather than Krafth replacing Tripps), but Elanga, Murphy, Barnes and Gordon are being rotated, Miley and Ramsey have been coming in for Joelinton and Tonali/Bruno. He might not be first name on the team sheet right now, but Joelinton is 29... And we all know football is a young mans game.

One of the things I like about Eddie is he's constantly learning - the 2023 cup final being a great example of that. I have no doubt the previous CL campaign - his first don't forget AND the 'group of death' was used as a massive learning point in that you need a squad for the CL, not just a team. The squad we've assembled since has quietly gone under the radar against the backdrop of Isak being a fanny but it's considerably stronger than it was 24 months ago. And this is despite having at the PSR nonsense to contend with as well! I think it's less about unwillingness to rotate and more a case of him having little option given the resources at his disposal.

I was going to say, part of the reason he wasn't rotating as much is because he had so few options from the bench worth a damn. Now at least, he can go into games against Premier League opposition with some confidence despite playing our, what, 3rd choice RB, 4th choice CB, etc. We couldn't do that earlier on.

Irrespective of whether we better last seasons finish, this is easily the strongest squad we've ever had in the PL. To be able to rest Bruno, Gordon, Botman, Trippier, Pope, Murphy, Miley, Joelinton, have Hall, Tino and Wissa injured and still beat a nigh on full strength Spurs team is unreal. And if you started those XI players we still would have beaten them comfortably. We might genuinely have a better squad than most of the PL at this point. 2 good players in every position, and more to come.

Yeah he did - 7 in a row which stood for years. I think Ferdinand beat it in 1995.
