  4. Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been appointed as manager of Serie A side Inter Milan. Mourinho has signed a three-year deal with the Italian side in his first job since he and Chelsea parted company by mutual consent in September 2007. The 45-year-old succeeds Roberto Mancini, who was sacked after leading the club to a third consecutive Serie A title last season. Mourinho will be unveiled at a press conference at 1030 BST on Tuesday. A statement on Inter's website said: "Internazionale announce the arrival of Jose Mourinho. "The Portuguese coach has signed a three-year contract and will work alongside Rui Farias, Silvino and Andrei Villas Boas. "The assistant coach will be Giuseppe Baresi." Farias, Silvino and Boas were all part of Mourinho's backroom set-up at Chelsea, while Baresi is the head of the Italian outfit's academy. The club added: "Thanking Roberto Mancini and his staff for the success obtained in four seasons as the leader of the team, all of Internazionale has the great pleasure to welcome Jose Mourinho and his coaches." Mourinho has been heavily linked with the role at Inter and has reportedly been taking Italian lessons ahead of any possible appointment. Inter appear to have drafted in Mourinho to help improve their success in Europe. Despite their domination on the domestic front, they have struggled in the Champions League and were beaten at the last 16 stage by Liverpool. "Serie A is feeling a little tender right now and perhaps not enjoying its status like before so having Mourinho joining is a very positive thing," said Italian football expert James Richardson. While at Porto, Mourinho won the Uefa Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004. He also led Chelsea to the Premier League title in 2005 and 2006, while the Stamford Bridge side were beaten by Liverpool twice in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2005 and 2007. Mourinho is expected to have plenty of funds to strengthen the side and has already been linked with Chelsea players Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

  6. Sven-Goran Eriksson has been sacked as manager of Manchester City. Despite guiding City to a Uefa Cup place last season, Eriksson was told by Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra he was no longer wanted as long ago as April. Ridiculous.
  7. Quotes from Slaven Bilic, the national team coach of Modric: "I would be very happy if Luka finds a new club before Euro 2008. I would want this for all of my players who are looking for new clubs and are at the end of their contracts. "As for Luka, Newcastle United are no doubt a big club - just behind the top five" "NUFC are in the range of Chelsea, Leeds United and Aston Villa but can invest a lot more money in new signings than let's say Tottenham. "Also it's more likely that Newcastle will be English champions than Tottenham. Luka wouldn't be making a mistake if he signs for The Magpies."
  8. According to Spanish sources however, striker Alvaro Negredo could be. The Almeria hotshot scored 13 goals in 37 games last season and has been recommended to United by technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere. Negredo was on the books of Real Madrid — where Vetere was previously employed as a star-spotter — before joining Almeria. And the Bernabeu club have a £3 million first option on the 22-year-old, with reports suggesting they are keen to exercise this, and sell the player on to United for around £9.5 million. Meanwhile, United are understood to be tracking Birmingham’s French midfielder Olivier Kapo.
  9. Troubled Gazza was carted away to hospital from a London train station last night, strapped to a wheelchair under police escort. Paramedics were forced to tie him into the chair after he fought with police officers and drunkenly collapsed at St Pancras. He was taken to the University College Hospital and later discharged himself after treatment. The former England star had fallen to the floor in front of shocked travellers just after 5.30pm. When uniformed officers tried to lift him to his feet, he hit out at them. Appearing to be very drunk, the police then had to drag him away as crowds gathered. Traveller Rosie Jeffrey, 44, from Hertfordshire, said: "When he tried to stand he kept falling. "Two officers came over and he was trying to hit out at them, shouting to be left alone. But he could barely stand and the officers had to drag him away. "When I looked closer it was Gazza... I couldn't believe my eyes. They wheeled him to the ambulance past crowds of people and he was trying to cover his face. "But he didn't really know where he was or what he was doing. It was so sad to see."

  13. NEWCASTLE UNITED are believed to be in early discussions with Cameroon midfielder Achille Emana over a potential move to St James’s Park. The 25-year-old is also being tracked by Seville, Real Betis and West Ham, while Portsmouth have been alerted by the player’s advisor Sebastien Thiery. Emana is currently contracted to French club Toulouse until 2011, but after the Ligue 1 outfit scraped to a disappointing 17th-place finish, in a season when they expected to build on Champions League qualification the previous year, Emana wants to quit France in favour of a move to Spain or England. Former Valencia youth product Emana could be available for as little as £5.5m and would join his Cameroon team-mate Geremi at Gallowgate. The player’s advisor Thiery says: “Achille is ready to play in the Premier League and Newcastle is a team he would relish playing for. “He is strong and is a box-to-box midfielder who also possesses a lot of pace. “He has the right number of caps and the right amount of experience at 25 not to be overawed by the Premier League, which would be an exciting challenge.” Emana’s international experience includes selection at both the 2006 and 2008 African Cup of Nations tournaments, and he played alongside Toon star Geremi in this year’s final, which culminated in a narrow 1-0 defeat by Egypt. United manager Kevin Keegan is thought to be keen to bolster his defence first and foremost this summer, but that fact that there is a question mark over exactly when Joey Barton will be back at Newcastle’s Benton HQ means that the Magpies could start the season short-handed in the midfield engine room. United would be likely to consult their current African contingent Oba Martins, Abdoulaye Faye, Habib Beye and Geremi over the player’s character. But while the player would love to move to Tyneside, there are still plenty of twists and turns likely to be lying ahead for the Magpies. United are considering an extensive list of players and chairman Chris Mort is yet to complete a hand-over to his successor. That is likely to be former London gambling club owner Derek Llambias, but the Chronicle understands that an announcement on the new structure at boardroom level is not imminent. Meanwhile, another player that United have been alerted about is French international right-back Sidney Govou. Govou has played almost 300 games for Lyon and has 31 caps and seven goals for his country. Yet with United well served in that position due to Habib Beye’s sparkling performances last term, a move for Govou is unlikely. It’s also understood 28-year-old Govou is interesting Portsmouth who can offer European football following their FA Cup final win over Cardiff.

  15. England coach Fabio Capello has brought Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Lewis into his squad after Chris Kirkland returned to Wigan due to a back injury First time since 1962 a player outside the top 2 divisions has been called up.
  16. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has made his first signing of the summer, bringing Bournemouth striker Sam Vokes to Molineux for an undisclosed fee. The 18-year-old, called into the full Wales squad for the first time on Monday for the friendlies against Iceland and Holland, scored 12 goals this season but could not prevent the Cherries from being relegated to League Two. Vokes has completed his medical and signed a four-year deal with the Championship club, who missed out on a play-off place to Watford on goal difference. McCarthy told Wolves' official website: "Sam is a great young talent who our scouts have been watching for some time. I saw him when he played for the Wales Under-21s against England last week and he was excellent. "He is a target man who is physical, strong and good in the air. He was involved in a real scrap in trying to keep Bournemouth up at the end of the season. It was tough but will have been a good experience for such a young player. "I have been impressed with him and I think he is quite capable of doing well in this league despite his tender years." Jimenez and Wise oot!
