  5. Fifa have made a final offer to Newcastle United of £1 million in compensation for Michael Owen's injury at the World Cup - six times less than the club are claiming from the game's world governing body. Owen ruptured his cruciate knee ligament 55 seconds after coming onto the pitch against Sweden in Germany last year and Newcastle are already receiving compensation from the Football Association of £50,000 a week towards his salary costs. The club had submitted a separate claim to Fifa for £6.2m but Sepp Blatter, Fifa's president, said they would only give 2.2m Swiss francs (£1m). Blatter added that the overall compensation should be shared between Fifa, the FA and the club's own insurers. "Newcastle have come saying they have to replace him with another player, that this is not fair," he said. "We have made a last offer there, and if someone has responsibility then it's the FA towards the player. "The transfer regulations say players put at the disposal of the national team should be insured by their club. The competition regulations of the World Cup say the national associations must make sure the players are correctly insured. We have also set up a special fund for injuries to players for all 32 participants of the competition with a total of 15m Swiss francs (£7m) available for everybody. "If you look who is asking for money [from the fund] then something is wrong because it is from the richest league in the world." The FA's insurance policy covers a player's wages, capped to a maximum £50,000 a week, for 52 weeks. Newcastle have also lodged a claim for further compensation from the FA as well as Fifa to cover the cost of signing Obafemi Martins for £10m as a replacement for Owen, who cost £17m from Real Madrid. An FA spokesman said: "The position remains unchanged. We have been in constructive discussions with Newcastle since the World Cup. We are sympathetic towards their position with reference to the injury and those discussions are ongoing."

  11. Michael Owen says he has suffered no setbacks in his recovery from knee surgery, but is aware that he is approaching the 'business end' of his rehabilitation. Owen has not featured for Newcastle since suffering a serious knee injury on World Cup duty with England last summer. The forward has undergone two operations on his knee and took a step forward in his rehabilitation earlier in February when returning to running training. Owen says he is on schedule to return this season, but is aware that he needs to guard against getting carried away and suffering a setback. "The latest is so far so good," Owen told Sky Sports News. "There have been no hiccups. "I am running in straight lines and kicking balls. I am not blasting the ball into the net or anything like that, but kicking the ball and passing and running in straight lines is where we are at the minute. "We will develop that into smacking a ball and twisting and training and if everything goes well I can play again this season. "With long-term injuries you can have problems coming back, my legs need to be tuned in to running and kicking balls regularly and once we get that it will be fine. "In the grand scheme of things I need to make sure it is right as I have a long career ahead of me. "I have had two major operations and I am convinced I am in the right hands to get things right. "Everything has gone like clockwork so far, but we are getting towards the business end."
