  7. Man-made organisms take a step closer to reality Last Updated: 7:02PM BST 21/08/2009 The creation of entirely new forms of life in the laboratory could be just months away claim scientists who said they had overcome a major obstacle in the technique. The synthetic biologists have already built their own DNA code for a man-made organism but attempts to transplant it into an empty cell had always failed. The host always attacks the new DNA and the new bacteria fails to spark into life. Now a US team at the J Craig Venter Institute, who have published in Science, claim to have come up with a way to overcome the problem, by “smuggling” the DNA into the cell and then managing to reboot the organism. So successful is the technique that Dr Venter, the US scientist, predicts that synthetic life could be created by the end of the year. The aim of the research is to make new microbes that can perform useful jobs, such as to produce biofuels, clean up toxic waste, and soak up carbon. But there are worries that man-made organisms could escape the laboratory and harm the environment, or rogue scientists could exploit the technology to create new kinds of deadly bacteria, In their latest experiment, they took the genome of an existing bacterium, transferred it to a yeast cell, and added some extra genes. This new genome was transplanted into another type of bacterial cell, which used it to produce a strain of bacteria ‘’that had not previously existed’’. The work now needs to be repeated using a synthetic genome.
  8. The Telegraph: Newcastle United still courting Barry Moat as deal nears A takeover deal that will end Mike Ashley's unhappy ownership of Newcastle remains on track, with Tyneside businessman Barry Moat edging closer to a deal. Telegraph Sport understands that negotiations between Moat and Ashley, first disclosed here, are at an advanced stage and a deal could be closed next week. The two sides are understood to be close to agreeing a price - Ashley is seeking £100 million - and Moat's finance is thought to be in place. With the end of the transfer window looming Moat has been working towards a deal this week, and held crucial talks with the club's banker Barclays. Newcastle currently rely on a £40 million facility from the bank to operate day-to-day, and Barclays would like to see it reduced as part of the deal. Reducing the wage bill is a priority and the likely departure of three more players from Premier League wages in the coming days, including Stephen Taylor, may ease the bank's concerns. Significantly Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias has acknowledged for the first time that a deal is close. Having repeatedly talked down Moat's prospects he said on Thursday the deal was "there or thereabouts". If Moat is successful Alan Shearer will be installed as manager and will attempt to adjust the squad before the transfer window closes.

  15. Crystal Palace v Newcastle Coca Cola Championship Venue: Selhurst Park Date: Saturday, 22 August 2009 Kick-off: 1500 BST Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC local radio, Final Score & highlights on The Football League Show TEAM NEWS Crystal Palace are still without striker Stern John. The summer signing has been sidelined since suffering an elbow injury against Plymouth on his debut. Newcastle skipper Nicky Butt is back in the Magpies squad after recovering from a hand injury, but Joey Barton will again miss out with a foot problem. Striker Andy Carroll must undergo a fitness test, having picked up a slight groin strain in the 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek. MATCH PREVIEW Newcastle's problems have been well documented but whatever state a club is in, a goalscorer makes all the difference and Shola Ameobi looks like he could make a real impact this season. The Magpies have started well and Ameobi, who has been with the club for nine years and sometimes struggled in the top flight, has netted four goals in his last two Championship. Crystal Palace have themselves made a decent start and were excellent in their 3-1 win at Ipswich, where summer signing Darren Ambrose scored twice. Ambrose spent just over two years with Newcastle after joining from Ipswich in a £1m deal, aged just 19. He was unable to establish himself and has since suffered relegation with Charlton. Now 25 and having made a great start to his Palace career, Ambrose is a man in form as he prepares to face his former club. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • Palace's last home league victory over the Magpies was a quarter of a century ago; 3-1 in the old Second Division in January 1984. • Newcastle visited Crystal Palace three times in the Premier League and won all three games. Crystal Palace • Palace are targeting their first back-to-back league victories since winning three on the bounce in December last year. • The Eagles have scored six goals in all competitions so far this term, and Darren Ambrose has got four of them. Newcastle • A win for Newcastle would give them a third consecutive success for the first time since April 2008. • Three points would not only be their first away win since early February, it would also make this Newcastle's best start to a league campaign in 14 years. • Shola Ameobi is set to make his 200th career league appearance. MOST RECENT MEETING Crystal Palace 0-0 Newcastle (30 April 2005)

  17. The Independent. Newcastle set to make takeover announcement By Damian Spellman, PA Newcastle will make an announcement on Monday over ongoing efforts to sell the club. Owner Mike Ashley was expected to make a decision by the end of this week over whether or not to accept one of the bids currently on the table, or to continue running the Magpies himself for another season. However, talks with local businessman Barry Moat, as well as two other consortia, are continuing as Ashley looks to strike a £100m deal for the club he bought for £134.4m a little more than two years ago. The longer things go without a conclusion being reached, the more likely it appears that the current regime will stay in place with the transfer deadline fast approaching and the Magpies' squad threadbare in the wake of 10 departures and just one arrival. However, although time is running down, the possibility of a new owner taking over remains alive, for now at least. The news will do little to appease fans who are hoping for a change of ownership and the installation of a new manager - most favour Alan Shearer, who would be appointed by several of the competing consortia - and have vented their anger at Ashley in recent months. However, they have also been pleasantly surprised by their start to the Coca-Cola Championship season, which has seen the team take seven points from a possible nine and will send them to Crystal Palace tomorrow sitting third in the table behind leaders Cardiff only on goal difference. Should Monday's announcement be that Ashley has decided to take the club off the market for the second time after a lengthy, but ultimately futile search for a buyer, he will then face a decision over his manager. Impressed by the way Shearer had run team affairs for the final eight games of a dismal campaign, he spoke to him at the end of last season with a view to making his appointment permanent. However, he put the club up for sale just days later after the former Newcastle skipper had outlined his plans for the way forward. It is understood Ashley believes greater experience is needed, and the Magpies have sounded out a series of potential bosses, including Joe Kinnear, in recent weeks. But caretaker Chris Hughton, who has received the backing of several players following a positive start to the campaign, has insisted he is happy to remain in charge for as long as his services are required. He said after the 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in midweek: "Nothing has changed, if the club is sold at any stage, then possibly I might get a knock on the door and be told that things will change. "I have very much enjoyed the challenge so far and I am very happy to continue until told otherwise." Whatever happens over the weekend, recruitment will be a major priority during the final few days of the transfer window with Obafemi Martins, Sebastien Bassong, Habib Beye, Damien Duff, Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Lovenkrands, David Edgar and Ignacio Gonzalez having left since the end of last season. In addition, Argentinians Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini have been linked with moves away, although the club today indicated that central defender Steven Taylor, reportedly a target for Everton, Liverpool and Aston Villa, is not for sale. That would be good news for Hughton, who admits the exodus has to stop soon. He said: "I am very hopeful that what we have here at the moment will remain at the club. "I am also very hopeful that come the end of the transfer window, we have got a squad that is able to compete in this division and a squad that is able to compete at the right end of the table." Danny Simpson, who joined on loan from Manchester United last week, is the only arrival to date, although there has been much speculation about Lovenkrands and Sol Campbell joining him.

  19. BBC iPlayer comes to Sony PS3 Sony’s been busy. As well as keeping us on our toes for the past millennia (or what’s felt like it) as we waited for the official announcement of the PS3 Slim, it’s also gone and signed up some of the world’s biggest players for some Playstation Network video goodness. Firstly, the BBC iPlayer – previously only available via the lengthy process of going through the PS3’s internet browser – will soon be available as a direct widget through the PSN for free. It’s big news for the recently shrunk console, as the iPlayer has already gone down an absolute storm on the Wii, popularity never having been one of the service’s problems. The next announcement is that Sony’s signed up a raft of big movie studios such as 20th Century Fox and Paramount to get a PSN movie rental and download service up and running. It’s expected that users will be able to rent movies on a shortterm download similar to Apple’s iTunes Movie set up. Sony Computer Entertainment president and chief executive Andrew House says of the deals: "This is no longer just for hardcore gamers, but for everyone. We believe that everyone enjoys entertainment differently and should have the choice as to what entertainment they consume and exactly how they consume it. PlayStation is the gateway to that entertainment."
  20. David Craig on SSN: No deadline set today. No bid for Taylor. Graham Roberts group have left it too late to come forward. Announcement expected on Monday regarding the sale.
