August 21, 2009 Mike Ashley sets deadline for Newcastle United takeover Helen Power Mike Ashley, the Newcastle United owner, has given Barry Moat a deadline of 5 o’clock this afternoon to buy the club. It is believed that Ashley is close to accepting that he will have to keep the club for at least another year. Sources close to the retail magnate said that he has still not received word from Moat that Barclays, Newcastle’s lender, has approved the sale. The bank must agree to roll the £40 million borrowings over to Moat’s consortium before he can buy the club.

The Daily Mail: Newcastle sale boost: Llambias closes on £100m deal for Championship club Newcastle's Derek Llambias gave the clearest indication yet that the troubled Championship club are on the verge of being sold. After months of impasse, the managing director admitted that the consortium being led by local businessman Barry Moat - who are likely to appoint Alan Shearer as manager - is now 'there or thereabouts'. Current owner Mike Ashley has been trying to sell the club for a reduced price of £100m since Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League. Ashley flew into the club's training ground this week for talks and was seen with Moat at St James' Park last Saturday Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...0#ixzz0OliIZZJU

A WORLD champion female runner is to have a sex test over fears she is a MAN. Caster Semenya, 18, stormed to victory in last night's 800 metres final at the World Championships in Berlin in 1 minute, 55.45 seconds - the fastest time of the year. But deep-voiced Semenya - who finished ahead of Britain's Jenny Meadows in third - could be stripped of her medal if she fails a "gender verification test". Athletics chiefs ordered the test three weeks ago when the beefy teenager, below after final, won the African junior championships in Mauritius - and smashed her personal best time by seven seconds. But it could take several weeks before the test result is known as several medical experts are involved and they each write a report. The athlete's DNA will also undergo a string of checks. The International Association of Athletics Federations spokesman Nick Davies said: "Following the African junior championships, the rumours, the gossip started to build up. "The test is extremely complex. It's a medical issue - not an issue of cheating." South Africa team manager Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said: "There was no cheating. We entered her as a woman and want to keep it that way."

The Times: Shola Ameobi strikes to raise farther fragile Tyneside hopes Newcastle United 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0 George Caulkin Newcastle United is a club on the cusp of possibility. Barry Moat, for the second game in succession, was in the directors’ box at St James’ Park last night. Alan Shearer was present, Mike Ashley was not and a victorious team was hailed by a raucous and ridiculously deserving crowd. The sense of what could be was palpable. And, yet, at present, they are also teetering on a precipice. Moat’s discussions with Barclays Bank about financing his prospective takeover of Newcastle are still to bring resolution, Shearer, his choice of manager, was merely a passionate spectator and Ashley’s absence was not significant. So near and all that. Uncertainty flows through Tyneside — ten first-team players have left and only Danny Simpson, who made his debut on loan from Manchester United, has arrived — but somehow the side is revelling in it. Everybody knows that hope could evaporate, but the defiance has been heartening. Unbeaten following their relegation, Newcastle share the lead of the Coca-Cola Championship courtesy of a narrow win against Sheffield Wednesday. Their inspiration was again Shola Ameobi, who has plundered four goals this season, although Steve Harper foiled a late chance for Francis Jeffers. Ameobi’s personal renaissance is almost as improbable as that of his team, but the striker’s good form can scarcely be questioned. Fresh from inflicting a hat-trick upon Reading on Saturday he continued in the same manner, scoring the only goal of an enterprising and energetic first half. A thudding long kick from Harper, the goalkeeper, was flicked on by Andrew Carroll, allowing Ameobi to control the ball on his chest and shoot from 12 yards. Route one-nil. Wednesday were far from idle, but Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini were barely troubled in the centre of the Newcastle defence. The difference was Ameobi, a player rising from entrenched underachievement to test Lee Grant, the Wednesday goalkeeper, with soaring and glancing headers. The second half was less fluid and Newcastle, whose squad is size-zero skinny, demonstrated signs of fatigue, but both goalkeepers were obliged to repel similar episodes of danger. A free kick from Ryan Taylor was punched away by Grant and Harper excelled in clearing a whipped effort from Michael Gray. An attendance of nearly 44,000 was another example of the immense potential that lies simmering beneath the surface at Newcastle. As always, it just needs to be tapped. Newcastle United (4-4-2): S Harper — D Simpson, S Taylor, F Coloccini, J Enrique — R Taylor (sub: D Guthrie, 90), K Nolan, A Smith, J Gutiérrez — S Ameobi (sub: N Ranger, 87), A Carroll (sub: Xisco, 58min). Substitutes not used: T Krul, D Guthrie, Geremi, K LuaLua,T Kadar. Booked: Smith, Coloccini, Taylor. Sheffield Wednesday (4-4-2): L Grant — L Buxton, D Purse, R Wood, T Spurr — S McAllister (sub: E Esajas, 72), J O’Connor (sub: F Jeffers, 80), D Potter, M Gray (sub: T Miller, 73) — J Johnson, M Tudgay. Substitutes not used: R O’Donnell, R Hinds, M Beevers, F Simek. Booked: Buxton, Miller. Referee: P Dowd.
