  10. Newcastle v Leicester Coca Cola Championship Venue: St James' Park Date: Monday, 31 August 2009 Kick-off: 1945 BST Coverage: Live on SKY, BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live & BBC local radio TEAM NEWS Newcastle face a striker shortage, with Andy Carroll and Xisco ruled out with groin injuries and leading scorer Shola Ameobi doubtful with a foot problem. Jonas Gutierrez is struggling with a hamstring strain, but Nicky Butt and Joey Barton are fit to return. Leicester hope to be cleared to play left-back Ryan McGivern, who has joined on loan from Manchester City. Striker Steve Howard should recover from a hamstring injury to face the club he supported as a boy. MATCH PREVIEW Both these teams have fared well since coming into the Championship from opposite directions. Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, who spent 16 months at Newcastle and had two spells as their caretaker manager, has presided over a promising start to the campaign for last season's League One champions. The Foxes are undefeated after their first four league matches, and in Matty Fryatt seem to have a striker capable of making an impact at this level. They will certainly need some firepower against Newcastle, whose defence has been hugely impressive. The Magpies have not conceded in nearly five-and-a-half hours of league football and have only let in one goal so far this season. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • Newcastle are unbeaten in six league games against Leicester, and have won the last three at home. Their only home defeat in 14 was in April 2000. • These clubs have not met at Championship level for 16 years. • Leicester's last visit to St James' Park in this division (May 1993) ended in a 7-1 defeat for the Foxes. Newcastle • Newcastle have won their last four games in all competitions. • They are vying for a fourth successive league win for the first time since April 2006. • Geremi could make his 150th English league appearance, and Steven Taylor his 150th club career start. Leicester • Leicester suffered their first defeat of the season when beaten by Preston in the Carling Cup last Tuesday. In the league, they have won two and drawn two and are unbeaten in 10. • Their only defeat in 13 league games came at Peterborough on 28 March. • The Foxes are yet to score in the first half of a Championship game this season. • Matty Fryatt has scored three goals this season and two more would take his total for Leicester to 50. MOST RECENT MEETING Newcastle 3-1 Leicester (7 February 2004) Newcastle scorers: Ameobi 30, Taggart 37 og, Jenas 59 Leicester scorer: Ferdinand 90

  16. Americans jet in for talks on Toon takeover Aug 28 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle THE American-based group interested in taking over Newcastle United have arrived in London for face-to-face talks with investment bank Seymour Pierce. The group, who are understood to have strong connections with professional sports organisations in the US, are currently working with Seymour Pierce duo Keith Harris and Tom Sheldon after making their interest know in the last fortnight. Toon owner Mike Ashley imposed a one-week deadline on wannabe owner Barry Moat with the Tyneside-based businessman attempting to agree terms with Barclays Bank to agree the club’s working overdraft facility of £39m. However, it’s believed that hopes are fading fast for United’s biggest corporate customer even though Ashley has been trying to push the deal over the finish line. The Chronicle understands that the Americans – who have North West sports retailer Geoff Sheard spearheading their bid – are attempting to close in on a deal with Ashley. United managing director Derek Llambias confirmed talks were taking place earlier in the week, although he did stress that the bid team was yet to provide “proof of funds”. With Sheard only representing the US group, the arrival of the main financial backers of the bid in the UK is a significant move. A source close to the deal in the capital told the Chronicle today: “The Americans are pushing like hell to get a deal through. “They arrived in London late yesterday and will speak to Seymour Pierce once again. “It’s at a critical stage and they don’t want to say too much. “Obviously with non-disclosure agreements signed it’s difficult for them. And it is a painfully slow process.” As revealed in the Chronicle on Tuesday, the Americans would install Alan Shearer as manager despite the great start made by United under interim boss Chris Hughton. They also intend to appoint New York-based strategic holding company The Omnicom Group to rebrand the Magpies on a global scale and increase sponsorship and advertising opportunities. And they will assign worldwide PR giants Fleishman Hillard to attempt to repair relations between fans and those calling the shots at the club. Toon supporters though have grown weary of takeover talk and today fanzine editor Steve Wraith said: “It all sounds like a grand plan. “But we have heard a lot of it before. “Hopefully the Americans can put their money where their mouth is and we can see some real developments in the next few days.”
  17. Spotify app approved for iPhone Apple has approved the Spotify iPhone application, allowing users to stream music to their handsets. The company submitted the application to Apple's iTunes App Store for its approval in July. The application will be free, but will require the user to have a premium Spotify subscription, which costs £10. The Swedish music streaming service is looked on as a rival to Apple's iTunes store because of its comprehensive, free library of millions of songs. Apple currently dominates the digital music market, which led many to speculate that the app may not be approved. However, many in the music also industry regard Spotfiy as an alternative, and a credible business model for an industry which has had difficulty adapting to the online world. "We're not surprised but we're thrilled," founder Daniel Ek told BBC News. "We had a great dialogue with Apple from day one." 'Scaling up' The application is designed to search for new music and will allow users to temporarily store playlists on their phone for use when there is no connection. It will also allow users to stream playlists. The premium service, which currently costs £9.99 a month, allows users to run Spotify on their computers without adverts. Mr Ek told BBC News that he was confident the app would bring a big surge in premium subscribers. "We're scaling up the systems because response has been tremendous even before the app is available," he said. The service, which launched last year, now has more than two million users in the UK, and more than six million across Europe. It has not yet launched in the United States but says it intends to do so by the end of the year. The company has already demonstrated an application for mobile phones running Google's Android software, though that has not been made available to the public.
