Cunts: Keane blasts idiot Robson tribute thief 14 August 2009 IPSWICH Town manager Roy Keane has branded a thief who stole scarves and shirts from the Sir Bobby Robson tribute outside Portman Road as an “idiot” and a “clown”. Keane made his comments today after police revealed that a “callous” thief was seen by a member of the public taking the items left in remembrance to the legendary ex-Town manager following his death at the age of 76 on Friday July 31. CCTV footage viewed by the police shows the man going along the tributes left by grieving members of the public at the statue of Sir Bobby and picking items out. It happened on Monday evening at about 6.30pm. Keane said: “Unfortunately in all walks of life you are going to get one or two idiots around and that is disrespectful to those people who left things for Sir Bobby. “But we also have to remember all the thousands of people who paid their respects and we should not focus on one or two clowns.” A Suffolk police spokeswoman, who described the theft as “callous”, said: “Clearly these items have been left in remembrance to Sir Bobby Robson and it is not in the spirit for anybody to be going and taking them away. People have put these down in remembrance and it is the same as taking something from a grave.” Last night, Ipswich Town Football Club said it was “distressed” and “disappointed” to hear of the theft. A club spokesman said: “The club has been made aware that a small number of items have been taken from the public tribute to Sir Bobby Robson and we are, naturally, distressed and disappointed to hear of the theft. “It is our further understanding that Suffolk Constabulary are investigating the matter and as always we will be assisting them in any way we can to help them find those responsible.” Members of the public started to leave their tributes around the Sir Bobby Robson statue on the day of his death. This included flowers, shirts and scarves. The man is described as being black, with short hair and wearing sunglasses with a black denim jacket and dark jeans. Police are appealing for anybody who sees anything suspicious in the area to contact them on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

BBC: Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is hopeful of signing Damien Duff after offering Newcastle £4m to buy the winger. Republic of Ireland international Duff, 30, has been at St James' Park since joining from Chelsea for £5m in 2006. "The clubs are talking and I hope the deal goes through," Hodgson said. "He is a player that interests us." Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, 36, has signed a new one-year contract extension with Fulham to keep him at the club until 2011. Duff, who grabbed Newcastle's equaliser in their opening-day draw with West Brom last week, has scored six goals in 86 games for the Magpies. He spent three years in west London with Chelsea between 2003 and 2006 after making his name at Blackburn. Duff worked under Hodgson as a teenager at Ewood Park and, according to the Cottagers boss, is keen to return to the capital. "Damien and I go back a long way from when we worked together at Blackburn," added Hodgson. "He wants to come back to west London." "Damien had injury problems at Chelsea and has done well at Newcastle given the turmoil there. "Every time he's played for Ireland he's consistently been one of their best performers. "We know what we'd be getting with Damien - he's an experienced and quality player." But Hodgson's bid to sign former Newcastle striker Mark Viduka is over after the 33-year-old Australian decided to call time on his career in England. "I wanted to know if he wanted to continue playing in the Premier League," Hodgson explained. "But by the end of our discussion it was pretty clear he'd made his decision to leave it behind and start a new life." Meanwhile, BBC Radio 5 live has learned that David O'Leary is no longer in contention for the vacant manager's job at Newcastle. The 51-year-old former Leeds United and Aston Villa manager was linked with the Magpies earlier this week, when it was thought owner Mike Ashley had decided the club was no longer for sale.
