  1. Another defeat for Villa puts them 10 points behind us and thus at least 10 outside automatic promotion. Almost dead and buried 9 games in. Despite that, I can see us doing them with another professional performance. They're in turmoil with Grealish (one of just 4 goalscorers for them this season) in hot water after smashing it til 8am on Saturday night, RDM under pressure and their nutjob owner on the loose.
  2. I've always liked him. He's only got good things to say about NUFC. Not sure if this story's done the round before, but... Barton skewers Mike Ashley, Newcastle United’s owner, with a simple story. When Barton was released from prison on bail he was placed in the care of Peter Kay in Southampton – and only allowed out between 7am and 7pm. Kay had convinced the judge that, while he would counsel Barton, the footballer would be more balanced if he played the game he loved. “Ashley offered me his helicopter,” Barton remembers, “as my curfew meant Pete and I needed to fly to and from training in Newcastle. It seemed really generous until I got an eye‑boggling invoice. It was business after all.”
  3. With form exactly like our first eight games we'd end the season with 86 points. And that would allow for about 17 defeats It's only been enough for auto promotion twice in the last 8 seasons though. I think the bottom line is we're likely to learn from this - it was clearly a display of complacency - and it'll probably do us some good long run. I think we'll end up with plenty more than 86 points.
  4. If we were to draw the mackems in one of the cups this season, I reckon we'd have our best chance of beating them since Hughton. A squad with team spirit who actually work for each other being the key.
  5. Gouff was pretty good in his half season 2012/13 after arriving, and continued that form through the first half of 2013/14. Didn't he score in 5 consecutive home games at one point? We were absolutely shite from 2014 through til mid 2016 (other than one flukey Pardew run in Nov/Dec 14) and I think Gouff's form dropped with that.
  6. Sels has definitely grown in confidence. And the last five games, where he's had very little to do (albeit he has made a couple of very good saves when called upon), will have helped. But he really does look dodgy half the time a ball is crossed into the box. Let's be honest, we'd have Krul and Elliot over him. But I recall Elliot's performances were pretty suspect at first too, so willing to give him time to prove me wrong. And I'd actually be surprised if Elliot does displace him as soon as he's fit again.
  7. This has been a pretty awesome month since Huddersfield. Just the strength in depth is what impresses me. Mitrovic, Perez, Gayle and Murphy could all be scoring goals in this division. I also think I overestimated how good the competition would be.
  8. Wijanldum's the type of player you could tell had a lot of quality, but disappeared when the going got tough in a poor side. I always thought he could flourish in the right team. Sissoko, on the other hand, is all pace and power. Other than that Chelsea game he never did anything to make me think he was too good for us.
  9. "Last season for Newcastle and in the Euros he (Sissoko) was fantastic" - Mauricio Pochettino
  10. We've genuinely got a squad now. I can't remember the last time we had that. Agree we won't have a first XI, and I like that. Just running through the squad... GK: Sels, Elliot, Darlow FB: Gamez, Anita*, Yedlin, Lazaar, Dummett, Haidara CB: Lascelles, Mbemba, Hayden, Clark, Dummett* Wingers: Ritchie, Gouffran, Atsu, Aarons, Yedlin*, Diame* CM: Hayden, Tiote, Shelvey, Colback, Anita, Diame ST: Gayle, Mitrovic, Perez, Murphy That's 3 or 4 players for every single position. All of whom you'd trust to do a job. Brilliant. I must say that Tiote staying is a bit of a boon for me, so long as he reacts like he did after January. Because other than Hayden we don't really have anyway to take on that holding midfielder role.
  11. It's also amazing how easy it is to speak with the right attitude. I understand Pardew was working under difficult circumstances with the board, and that McClaren was, well, just a fucking moron, but just speaking with pride in the club brings the fans on board.
  12. Yeah, you look at Wijnaldum - who clearly wanted to leave - and even Janmaat, who kept their heads down, stayed out of the media, did what was asked of them and quietly got their moves. Sissoko's talked his way into trouble.
  13. Aren't Everton sealing a £35m deal for Behrami? In addition to the £26m for Bolasie?
  14. 4.5m isn't going to do much for us. Worth having the cover - Dummett's not a bad utility defender. I'd prefer to see him over Clark for example. Also, yes on Riviere. Thank fook for that. I know there're a lot of candidates lately, but he's got to be the wort signing we've ever made.
  15. Just had a look at L'Equipe's article. Has a little more detail on it than you might think. Quick & liberal translation below: While Tottenham have made a €25m bid to rescue Moussa Sissoko from his final three years at Newcastle, another London club have involved themselves in the deal: Chelsea! The Blues are currently in discussion with the advisers of the French attacking midfielder, who was earlier this morning authorised to leave Clairefontaine while the rest of the group flew to Bari. Spurs, qualified for the Champions League, are thought to have an advantage on West Brom, the other club who have made an offer for Sissoko. But Chelsea is a different proposition to WBA, even despite having no European football to offer this season. The Blues would be willing to stump up the 30 million required by Newcastle to free the former Toulouse player, something Tottenham have refused to do.
  16. Sky sources: Tottenham not prepared to meet Newcastle's £30m valuation of Moussa Sissoko. < Copying from SSN scroller This could get interesting...
  17. Fair play, I'd take that. Hope's been the most reliable source this last few months. Gives us plenty of room for ammunition in Jan if needed too.
  18. Yeah, I feel like his reputation has taken a battering for those dreadful Euros performances when he was clearly unfit. Sadly looks like another sick note who'll never fulfil his potential. Much like Rolando Aarons is appearing to be for us.
  19. Lee Ryder made some good points yesterday. Yeah, stop the press. Bolasie went for £28m, Benteke £32m, Mane £36m. Now Benteke's a striker and I think both of the other two are better than Sissoko, but given his profile after a few jammy Euros performances I don't think it's unreasonable we should be accepting at least £28m.
  20. Good move. They're currently above us in the table having scored 12 goals already. I just hope it doesn't come back to bite us when they pip us to second More likely he'll be useful in nicking more goals for them against our other rivals.
  21. Villa definitely not in panic mode territory then? I really hope they don't come up with us.
  22. At least with England you can shut it out for two years. Then it gets to tournament time. The raw excitement. This could be our year. Well, it probably won't. But just imagine if it were. And then you realise you've got an absolute abortion of a manager again and you'll crash out with a couple of insipid draws against teams you shafted in qualifying.
  23. Have a mate who's a Coventry fan and thought he was the bee's knees. He's never really had a proper runout for us, but I'd probably give him to another (non-rival) Championship team til Jan. Then we'll have more of an idea as to whether he's cut out for this division.
  24. Thought the second yellow was a tad harsh, but the ref had shown his hand in the first half with some absolute shockers. Yellow for Perez for that twat blocking his run? Then yellow for whoever it was who complained? This was, though, one of the best games I've seen in a long time. That 20 minute spell after the first goal was delicious. And we closed the game off really nicely. Remember I don't think we'll see too many games where Perez leads the line on his own.
  25. To be fair, if he stays we've almost broke even on the transfer window and got someone who'll be playing for a move in January. If he thinks people are watching, he'll be able to tear this league up. Though from what I've seen of Diame I'm really not sure Sissoko is an upgrade.
