That's not what I was saying. I don't think anyone else was either. Not sure how an Englishman regarding the current England side as second rate is arrogant either. We're widely regarded in the media etc.as a 'quarter final side', but we've only managed that once in the last four major tournaments (and we didn't even qualify for one of those). If we made the last 8 or better on a fairly consistent basis you could possibly call us 'top tier' or whatever but we've only bettered that three times in our history and two of those occasions were on home soil. That's excepting our good record in the Olympics, which was the de facto world championship before the World Cup existed.

What do reckon McClaren was on at Derby? Not a huge amount and for a bit more plus a crack at a top flight club again I don't think he'll be on big wages (in Premier League terms). Charnley's a similar case with the importance of his position and the wages he'll be on I reckon.

I think the manager is an issue like. Not suggesting it's the only one by any means but we continue to employ people on the cheap in the most important role at the club.
