The one thing these owners haven’t done so far is let a selling club take the piss. They’ve walked away from deals that played out in the media in the way this one has - Diego Carlos springs to mind - and have worked hard to establish a reputation as tough negotiators to stop selling clubs trying to add a Newcastle tax. This deal makes zero sense after all that. I think, and hope, we walk away from it now. We have to be honest about where we are in the bullshit world of psr/ffp. Guehi is a good defender but he’s never worth £65m and we don’t have the financial headroom to throw that kind of cash on him just because he had a good euros. There are other, good CB options out there for much less.

that’s a reductive way of looking at it. Anyone with a half a brain knows we have the richest owners in the world but the rules put in place are designed to slow how quickly we can splash the cash so we have to be cute. Let’s say psr means we can “only” spend £100m or thereabouts this summer. Do we throw the bulk of it at a centre half, where we’re reasonably well stocked, or right wing, where the two players fighting for the starting position were playing for Steve Bruce? Ultimately it’s not a decision made by bullshit artists on a poorly-populated message board, but given the lack of transfer movement so far, what the fuck else are we supposed to chat shit about?

And I do suspect we’re going to pay over the odds for Guehi. He probably would have gone for £30ish million before the euros and now we’re talking double that. Not my money either but it would be good to avoid another psr scramble of the sort we saw at the end of the season just gone

The ideal outcome is Guehi in, Miggy out and a new RW to relegate Murphy to squad player. I love Murphy - valuable squad player - but you don’t him as first choice RW

That’s the question the thread is asking tbf. Obviously it depends on who is available/prepared to sign for us and that will shape the decision. I think Guehi is a quality signing and a big statement of intent, particularly after the euros. But we already have a good mix of centre halves, though two of them are crocked and schar isn’t getting any younger, so it does make sense if we can afford him and he fancied the move. Right Wing however looks the weakest area of the squad to me and the one in most need of a quality upgrade. Murphy is probably first choice RW, were the season to start tomorrow.

he’s unquestionably a top centre half and I wouldn’t be turning my nose up at all if he signed. It’d be a statement signing after the euros he just had but if I was running the show, and given the psr constraints, I would rather invest more in a top RW and maybe go for a cheaper option at RCB, preferably one who is very comfortable playing out from then back. I’m not sure Guehi is that good on the ball tbh

He’s a great defender but doesn’t feel like the sort of signing we would typically make. He’ll probably never cost as much as this after impressing in the euros. My other issue is he’s not a like for like Schar replacement. Yes, he can play RCB, but he doesn’t have that ability to step into midfield, or Schar’s range of passing. Not many central defenders do tbh but I’ve got a feeling this might be agent talk and we’re more likely to sign a cheaper CB, maybe from abroad
