  1. just picked up that xx album. enjoying listening to it while pretending to do work on a quiet friday afternoon in the office
  2. Ooo thats a tough call man. shearer got 37 goals that season for blackburn. sir les managed 29 for us. very difficult call to be fair. i think the team collectively bottled it; i wouldn't want to single out sir les for blame.
  3. well if the shields gazette say so, it must be true
  4. the only signing that came close to generating the same excitement levels in recent years was owen. shame he turned out to be crap for us. there are similarities in both signing for us though. both arrived as england's number 1 striker. neither achieved quite as much as we were hoping for. when shearer signed, i expected him to be the final piece in the jigsaw in our title challenge but of course it never turned out that way. owen signing i thought would guarantee us goals and hopefully get us back into the top four. so slightly lower expectations than when shearer signed because the team he was joining wasn't as good. we were pretty unlucky with both of them when it came to injuries. owen was never the same after he did his knee.
  5. That is a great film. Somewhat underrated I think as it never seems to get the plaudits some of his other stuff has received. i think it's his best film. david thewlis puts in a stellar performance. nice turn from ewen bremner too. "Maggie!"
  6. really? fulham have got more bunce to offer players than us? what a depressing prospect - aspiring to be at fulham's level. sort it out mike ffs
  7. He'll choose us out of them. Look at the options. Sunderland - loads of strikers, a chatty club who aren't attractive. Everton - ramshackle deathtrap stadium stadium no European football this season, 1/4 empty stands for most of the games plus he's a Liverpool fan and he won't want to play for a low profile club. Celtic - SPL. Newcastle - unifinished business, he loved his time he for the most part probably more than any other period in his career, idolised by half the support. he might choose us if we were in for him but i don't think we're in the running, are we? Caulkin says we are really? well i'd i'd love it if we were and i think he might be interested if we are, but i can't see it, sadly. hope i'm wrong like - he'd transform our front line. ideal partner for carroll
  8. his goal returns during that era were different class when you look back at it. only henry has been as consistently around the 30 goal a season mark in recent years. blackburn years 93-94 - 48 games/34 goals 94-95 - 49 games/37 goals 95-96 - 48 games/37 goals newcastle 96-97 40 games/28 goals tbf, his strike rate always stacked up for us when he was fit, even when he was playing in crap sides and even later on in the twilight years. 98-99 - 40 games/21 goals 99/00 - 50 games/30 goals 01/02 - 46 games/27 goals 02/03 - 48 games/25 goals 03/04 - 51 games/28 goals 04/05 - 42 games/19 goals 05/06 - 41 games/14 goals

  10. i re-watched mike leigh's naked recently too. still dark, still brilliant. 9/10
  11. funny people. i quite enjoyed it. it made me laugh plus it was a bit more grown up compared with most of apatow's films. 6/10.
  12. i often wondered along those lines. he was never quite the same player after that injury after his first year with us. we had to build the team to play around his strengths in the end. he almost became bigger than the club at one point too. having said all that, he's still our record goal scorer, and was class those seasons he had bellas alongside him. he was still the best finisher in the game, even after he lost all his pace. he was also unlucky not to have played in many great newcastle sides. we probably peaked the season before he arrived. he was feeding off scraps for most of his time with us. He peaked two seasons before he arrived. Turned down a move here to go to Blackburn too btw. he was still shit hot before he joined us though. was averaging over 30 goals a season at blackburn and got about 30 in his first season with us before he got injured. he only played in one really great newcastle side mind, and it was for only one season. the only side that came close to that one was when sbr was in charge and i'd say that was a good side, rather than a great one. I didn't say otherwise did I? You said he was unlucky not to play in a great Newcastle side though whereas it was actually down to his own choosing. well yeah, but he was also unlucky we were only title contenders for one season after he joined. when he signed we looked like being the main challengers to man u for some time. he ended up playing in sides that were mostly gash. EDIT - you said he peaked two seasons before he arrived. i'm not sure that's right. he was considered one of the best strikers in the world after euro 96 and had one season for us at his highest level i'd say

  15. i always thought it was a bizarre move for him, though at least he got some first team football and a chance to put himself in the shop window.
  16. this thread is getting annoying. 18 pages in and still no confirmation he's signing. imagine if we end up with jason roberts instead after all this
  17. there's definitely a balance to be struck between racking up massive debts like the previous lot did and trying to get away without spending over 50p like ashley.
  18. Ketsbaia, Speed, Dabizas, Solano as well. All very good signings. solano was. speed turned out to be. not sure about the other two
  19. get the newcastle online boys to get a bring back bellas campaign going. won't even need a dossier this time as he's familiar with all the bars in town.
  20. i think you're right but only because of his wage demands. i doubt ashley would offer him a third of what he's on at citeh. if we made him a serious offer, i think he'd come back. he probably had his best years with us and was a hero until the after-math of his bust up with souness when he fell out with shearer. That's the problem. I bet he's on about £90k a week. Even if City paid 2/3s I doubt Ashley would agree to it. We don't seem to be even sniffing around him. What's frustrating is him and a player like Ben Afra could potentially transform us from a bottom 6 to a top half side just like that. absolutely. it's crazy that ashley can't see that just relatively moderate investment could save him millions we would lose by going down again. spending around £5m could be the difference between a top half finish and a relgation battle. plus, investing some cash on the right kind of players will get supporters on his side and people through the turnstiles. i can't believe this guy is a billionaire like. he's a fucking joke.
  21. well, we're certainly not showing much ambition at the moment, that's for sure. so far we've signed an over the hill and overweight sol campbell, a crocked youngster on a freebie and a championship full back, who by all accounts is no better than we already have. i still think we need a minimum of two new players to come in before the window closes. and two quality players, not old age rejects or youngsters no body has heard of. we need players good enough for the permier league now.
  22. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/footballnatio...91466-27050772/ sad to think we're not even in the mix for him
  23. you're right, but we finished in the top 5 consistently when he was with us. so who cares if he gets up peoples' noses? he's a leap above any of our other players.
