Simply looking at long ball statistics doesn't tell the true story either btw, as the stat isn't exclusively for defenders pumping the ball up to forwards. The limited range of passing in our midfield (after Cabaye left, which I mentioned in the summers transfers thread) will have contributed to keeping our long ball statistic down, whereas other teams probably have more capable long passers in other areas of the pitch. The stat doesn't tell you, for example, whether 80% of our long balls were Mike Williamson pumping the ball up field from the back and whether 50% of Liverpool's were Joe Allen spraying balls about from the centre of the park.
