Ie McLaren would probably have accepted poorer terms...such as 'if you don't qualify then the contract is terminated there and then'. Possibly he wouldntnt have accepted this-but then if that was the case the FA look even worse as they appointed an incompetent (thus increasing the chances of not qualifying) AND gave him favourable terms in the event of us not qualifying. The alternative response to McLaren driving a hard bargain on those terms might have been to tell him to fuck off.

Have to say that this was on my radar too as Croatia's third went in. If he stays past the summer then I think we'll all be happy he's not flogged himself to death across the course of an intense knock-out competition, while knowing he was not fit to do so. No way of knowing what his injury/fitness status would have been come summer but to me that was a very real risk that he would definitely have taken. That's if he stays of course, it could all be completely academic.
