Neville's a conundrum. He's one of the more engaging pundits but at the same time you know the pure evil that lurks behind those eyes. Last night was a case in point; gave a really fair summary of where the game was won and lost, but at the same time you knew he'd have spent 90 minutes absolutely praying for Man U to win.

FA given Permission to speak to Roy Hodgson over England job

Right judgment on Redknapp tbf so fuck him. He was acquitted on his dog's offshore account because it's extremely difficult for the prosecution to discharge the criminal standard of proof in tax cases-it's just very easy for a defendant to muddy the waters at the end of the day, which is effectively all he did. Outside of a criminal court however, everybody knows he wasn't innocent. Imho the FA has thought long and hard and reached the difficult conclusion that it doesnt want a manager who opens offshore bank accounts in his dog's name while claiming he can barely read. It's a perfectly legitimate tactic to get you off a conviction for tax fraud but it's not the best job application for the top footballing post in the country. -

He's quite likable and the players are a bunch of cunts, so it takes the edge off for me. Redknapp would have had the opposite effect from an enjoyment point of view. I don't expect us to win it or even compete so I'm happy to watch it with my mind in neutral and anything's a bonus. From a footballing perspective, theres some good points been made about his prior tournament experience and the fact we're not good enough to play possession football anyway in key games, so his mid-table counter attacking mindset might work to our advantage. -
I know where you're coming from but I think you have to get away from the psychological negativity of it. At the end of the day, Liverpool will win trophies this season in spite of the vast money they've spent. They've actually spent it very badly as the league shows, but they'll win trophies because that's what the media demand of them, so thats what they do. It's that added pressure that drives standards up at the club. They're actually a bit of an irrelevance this season in the PL/CL sense, but the media obsession with them means they're driven to succeed-there's nowhere for their players to hide-and that will pay off in the cups. That's true of a lot of the established clubs and you have to get up there and earn that. It's exactly the same with Man U and Arse. Traditionally, when we underperform, it's a talking point for a bit but then we fade away and the media dont bat an eyelid. The local media have almost always all been in bed with previous regimes so they don't help maintain standards (honestly that's a big thing you notice living outside the area) and we're a one club city anyway so we're the only show in town, which is another reason for us to be complacent. All that has to change from the top down and thats why I've always voiced my disapproval about Shepherd bad mouthing his own supporters in Spanish brothels as much as I have Ashley acting the prick in the Bigg market. It's all bad for the club as it portrays us as a joke and that feeds into the players psyche when they're eg up against double winners in FA cup finals (or any crunch game for that matter)...who do you think is more likely to dig deep and die for their club in those games? Our players have always had the option of going missing with relative impunity (from both their employer and media), their's on the other hand would be crucified by both, as they know more is expected of them for their pay cheques. The fact we played Arsenal and Man U in those specific finals is neither here nor there really either. Double winning etc is more common nowadays because there are only a few select clubs who win things these days anyway-thats just how football has changed. So if you get to a cup final, you've got to expect to be playing them and you've got to try and beat them, otherwise there's just no point in being there. Theres certainly zero point in bemoaning the fact you've come up against them in the final in any event. Way, way too much is made of that. With Jonny on this one overall. It was gutting to get spanked off Wigan given the run we were in, but the real Newcastle this season has been one of genuine resilience and that deserves recognition as it's been a sea change to what we're used to as fans. It's importance can't be understated. I'm hoping for the best in the final few games without expecting anything, but I acknowledge the efforts of everyone at the club that's got us to this point as it's been done entirely with sweat and hard graft for the first time in a long long time and I think that's the best foundation for building.

Look how classic that ball and boots combo are in the Maradona pic and then contrast them to the dayglo tragedy that's de rigueur in football nowadays. And I don't just mean in CLS in fairness to J69

What's going on in this thread?

Ronaldo has just been utterly immense at Real. Delighted he fluffed his penalty in the shootout and that it counted in them losing out. You only get away with that for one club and that's Man U. On the business side of it though, a bargain at £80 million as Keane says. Huge money for Man U in the short term but a key player they've been unable to replace. Not their fault though as the player wanted to leave/more money etc etc at the end of the day. That's just modern football.

I think we're in genuine uncharted territory atm so it's a really thought provoking question for me. I realise I'm often criticised for not offering my opinion, however on this occasion my guess would be: a deluge of flawed predictions in the summer, followed by a raft of full and frank apologies in January.
-
Knowing me as well as you do Catherine, you'll know this brings me absolutely no pleasure whatsoever.
-
Thanks LBT and Chez too. Suffice to say it was a little unexpected, but his full apology, (which came with a complete retraction of his numerous flawed predictions for this season) was a gesture that's really gone a long way for me. It's allowed me to draw a line under the whole debacle and join with Leazes in looking forward to the European adventures to come under his man. That's now an end to matters as far as I'm concerned and I'd be happy if we said no more about it. Indeed I'd ask people to respect my wishes on that point. For completeness though I suppose I should just add publically that I accept the apology in full.

Let me take this opportunity to commend Gemmill, in the face of serious provocation. We all move forward together in a spirit of maturity.
-
Just to say that, having been the beneficiary of a full and frank apology, it would be churlish of me to print any pm's, so I won't. I respectfully ask Gemmill to join me in this.
