It's mental because the schools don't have enough staff as it is, but they're laying permanent staff off and replacing them with supply teachers and newly qualifieds (who will probably leave teaching within 5 years anyway because it's such a broken profession) cos it's cheaper. It's such a fucking mess. The schools obviously don't want to do it, but they're in an impossible position because their budgets are fixed and the govt is telling them to magic up pay rises from an unchanging total.
