The secret to sickies is to ring early (7ish) and leave a voicemail. That way you're unaffected by the reaction of the person you're telling. Plus it's easier to put your ill voice on when you don't have someone interrupting with questions and that. If they don't have voicemail, ring and talk to their secretary/assistant/the receptionist. Voicemail is your best bet though. I have left many an excuse on voicemail and then gone about my day of illness/emergency holiday with not a care in the world.
