Oh aye, it's a play for internal reasons but: https://twitter.com/ABarbashin/status/1496828064407429122?s=20&t=4y-JvcEcj0ySBImzr82-uQ

He doesn't have to do it tomorrow.

Your average Russian can want what they want - but it's arguable what they even know, Ukraine is not Russia, they don't even speak the same language and even the alphabet is different. It's related but distinct. It's what the Ukrainian folks want that is important IMO.
-
It won't, Georgia, Chechnya, Crimea now Ukraine, he's already said he sees the Russian "empire" as the old USSR countries, if he get's away with this, there'll be another.
-
He can invade, but he hasn't got the forces to hold it against resistance, it's too big and too populated. Also re a point you made in an earlier comment. We/NATO have a significant technological advantage over the Russian capabilities, that's why they waited for daylight to invade - their sensors etc. aren't that "state of the art". Russia does have massive air superiority in the area (over Ukraine) and shit loads of tanks (West massively reduced armour capabilities because "tanks are a cold war thing" - great idea!!!) but as the old adage goes, you can take territory with tanks, but you can't hold it with tanks. Putin's got about a third of his military capability in/around Ukraine, there's brigades from Siberia and all over involved, they can't stay there indefinitely.

Disagree mate, Europe is basically funding Putin's expedition in Ukraine because of that pipeline. He turns off the tap he turns off the cash.
-
That's why you have to do everything in your power to avoid a full on war with Russia. Full on war potentially damages you irreparably in economic terms, you take shorter term hit to try and avoid full on war, full on war is the worst possible outcome. You take the hit on your terms not on Putin's, he hasn't and probably won't turn the tap off because he needs the money it generates. Only way this ends moderately well is to squeeze him at home and hope he gets toppled. He's like Johnson, surrounded by less than brilliant lickspittle's who've clung to his coat tails, he is politically vulnerable in Russia.
-
We could sort it, our pipelines to EU are running at around 17% capacity, increase gas from Norway although that's pretty maxed out (80-odd percent) we could take LNG from US (they'd take our eyes out, but have shit-tons of the stuff) and send our North Sea output to Eu, taking their eye's out in the process. It's be messy and costly, but what price a few cities raised to the ground. Russian economy would tank WAY before significant European harm.
-
Russia supplies less than 30% of EU oil and around 60% of EU gas, gas accounts for one fifth of European energy demands, so Russia supplies 60% of one fifth of the need. As a continent I think I'd rather suffer economic harm for a short period than physical harm from a military action.
-
Needs draconian sanctions asap in my opinion, because he won't stop at Ukraine, Poland will be getting very twitchy and Poland is in NATO.
-
Can't see how that would be, Russia's economy is smaller than Italy's and slightly bigger than Spain's, sure there'd be economic ramifications but nowhere near a quid pro quo or a fiscal armageddon.
