  4. MICHAEL OWEN'S Premier League commitment was last night called into question by Wigan chief Dave Whelan. The striker is desperately looking for a top-flight club after being relegated with Newcastle. But Whelan wondered if Owen still has the bottle. He said: "Would we be interested in him? No. Firstly, his wages are too expensive. Then has he got the urge, the bottle and drive to do what the Premier League wants you to do? It's a big question." Owen's contract with Newcastle ends this month. His agents have sent out a glossy 34-page brochure to various clubs - but not Wigan - reminding them of how good the England striker, 29, has been. Whelan added: "He has been a great player. But he's looking a bit injury-prone. That's only my opinion. Everton and Liverpool might think differently. "For us to pay someone over £25,000 a week is a hell of a lot. His wages will have to come down. "I'm not criticising the lad. He has been a magnificent player and can still do a hell of a job for somebody. "Anyway, I would think he will want to go to a much bigger club than Wigan." Whelan DID try to buy Owen four years ago when he was frozen out by Real Madrid. The striker joined the Toon instead for £16million. Whelan explained: "When I tried to sign him I wanted him to be available to play for England. It was the World Cup. "I was thinking about Wigan to a degree but I wanted England to benefit from Michael Owen." I wish Dave Whelan would just shut the fuck up!

A FARMER last night told of his horror after 16 of his cows were killed by a LIGHTNING STRIKE. The animals were in a field sheltering from a storm when one was hit by a massive bolt. It is understood the lethal electric charge then conducted through a puddle and killed the other 15 cows. Jim McDougal, manager at the farm where the bizarre bovine tragedy happened, said: “I felt numbness, it was just unbelievable. “They were all either sitting or lying where they had fallen in a regimented row. I have never seen anything like it in my life.” One onlooker added: “It was absolutely unbelievable — one minute the cows were standing there and the next they just dropped like stone. “The poor beasts didn’t have a chance — it literally happened in seconds. “The lightning had been really bad. It was right out of the blue after all the good weather we’ve had.” Jim, 60, said he and his daughter Alison had gone to the field at Saltoun House Farm, near Pentcaitland, East Lothian, after being alerted by the neighbour. He added: “The cows were singed and we could smell it in the air when we arrived. I am very upset but it was a freak act of nature so there was nothing I could do about it.” Advertisement His wife Elizabeth said: "Jim could not believe the carnage he saw. "A man down the road saw a cow being struck by lightning and then the vet thinks it conducted the lightning to the other cows as they were standing in the same puddle under a tree.” A vet from nearby Haddington took blood samples from the dead animals and confirmed the 18-month-old bullocks had died from a lightning strike on Sunday. In February The Scottish Sun told how a cow in Australia had been left “flame grilled” after it had been hit by a lightning bolt. The poor creature was left with blistering burns after the accident in Gladstone, Queensland. Last October 52 cows were killed in a similar incident on a ranch near Montevideo, Uruguay. The animals had been standing close to a metal fence at a farm when they were blasted. A month earlier 53 cattle were killed by lightning in Katosi, Uganda. They had been seeking shelter underneath trees. Around 100 lightning bolts hits the earth per second — or 8.6MILLION times a day

Very poor move for him, he could have gone to a better club. ManC wont be playing European football next season so hardly a step up, were as he could have stayed at Villa or gone to Lpool and played in Europe. But I guess the lure of the £ got to him.

  17. AN Air France jet which vanished over the Atlantic may have had Brits on board, the PM said today. The plane — feared to have been struck by lightning — was carrying 228 people when it disappeared from radar just minutes after reporting an electrical short-circuit following turbulence. A desperate search is being carried out off the coast of Brazil. Gordon Brown said today: "I do fear that there may be some British citizens on board. We are doing all the checking that is necessary." The Foreign Office said they were "urgently investigating" the incident. Today Air France chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon said he feared the worst. The airliner boss added: "We are probably facing an air catastrophe." Passengers on the flight included one baby and seven children. Flight AF 447 left Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last night at 7pm local time (11pm BST) and was expected in Paris at 11.15am (10.15am BST). An official with the French government's transport agency said contact with the Airbus 330-200 was lost at 3.20am BST, just over four hours into the flight. A message reporting the electrical fault was sent at 3.15am BST, it was said. But according to reports there was no mayday sent before the plane vanished from radar. An Air France spokesmen said the Airbus airliner "was probably struck by lightning". Tragic Air France said it received a message at 3.00am BST saying the jet had "crossed through a thunderous zone with strong turbulence". It added that an automatic message was then received "signalling electrical circuit malfunction". A UK airline safety expert said: "It's almost unthinkable for a western European airline just to go missing like this." A senior French minister said that had the plane managed to stay airborne it would have run out of fuel by now. Jean-Louis Borloo, the second most senior figure in the country's cabinet, said: "By now it would be beyond its kerosene reserves so unfortunately we must envisage the most tragic scenario." He told France Info radio that the plane had disappeared from military as well as civilian radar screens. He also insisted the plane had not been hijacked. An Air France official earlier said: "We are very worried. The plane disappeared from the screens several hours ago. "It could be a transponder problem, but this kind of fault is very rare and the plane did not land when expected." The plane disappeared about 186 miles (300km) north east of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal. The Brazilian Air Force said it was currently searching near the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha. A spokesman said the search and rescue mission was mounted after the jet failed to make regular radio contact. French president Nicolas Sarkozy was informed of the incident and expressed his deep concern. Advertisement Click here to find out more! He has demanded that the relevant authorities do everything they can to find the plane and "shed light on the circumstances surrounding its disappearance as rapidly as possible". Air France spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand added: "Air France regrets to announce that it is without news from Air France flight 447 flying from Rio to Paris. "Air France shares the emotion and worry of the families concerned." She said the airline has installed an information centre at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport for the families of those aboard, including 216 passengers and 12 crew.
