In the early 2000s I myself had to haul some colleagues away from a gang of Irish lads in the Boston Tavern in Tufnell Park in North London, these Dorset lads had never heard the rebel songs they were singing and when they realised what was being sung they weren’t very impressed. McLean has never taken up arms in his life and neither had these lads but within the Irish community on mainland England since Victorian times there has always been a significant minority who have always believed in “the cause”.
