Ketamine is still available to use as an induction agent and it does have several favourable properties, although as you can imagine, its use is limited by the dysphoric effects, particularly on waking up, so it only tends to be used in certain circumstances, or if you have a particularly eccentric anaesthetist. I give the people what they want. It's really good as a field anaesthetic because you keep breathing and don't lose your airway. The US army gave it to soldiers in Vietnam for this purpose but they used it to get off, which gave rise to its popularity as a recreational drug.

I always take my car keys, wallet, phone with me upstairs when I go to bed, but someone once told me that they deliberately left the keys downstairs so that if a burglar did break in they'd grab them and leave and she wouldn't be caught up in it. My initial instinct is that I'd imagine that 'reasonable force' probably doesn't extend to brutally stabbing someone. However, say the guy picked up the knife just with the intention of scaring them off. I've been robbed several times over the last few years, most recently in March, and if I'd caught them at it and a knife was to hand I'd probably have picked it up with this intention. But if it hadn't worked and they still attacked me then I'd have probably used it. A thing that people often say is "I wish I'd caught them at it" but when you think about outcomes like this I'm extremely glad I didn't.
