  13. I'm off out to play bingo with the people from work! I shit you not. Jesus fucking wept, didn't you get a better offer??? This is the second time I've had to go with the people from work. I even had to join the bloody bingo hall last time to get in, but I've no idea where the card is. So far from being able to sneak in relatively unnoticed, I have to stand in a queue of grannys and announce proudly "Yes, I AM a member, but I seem to have misplaced my card. Would you be so kind as to check your records and furnish me with a replacement?" The internet hardman has a bingo card Is that why you called off the footie on Saturday? Is the prize money at Gala Bingo to good to turn down at the weekends.

  16. SAM ALLARDYCE has revealed his admiration for Steve Harper after applauding the Toon goalkeeper’s professionalism. The Newcastle United manager is working around the clock to sign up to three new defenders before the Premiership kick-off in 18 days’ time. However, he admits he can rest a little easier knowing he is covered in the shot-stopper’s department with Shay Given, Steve Harper, Tim Krul and youngster Fraser Forster making up the goalkeeper’s union at St James’ Park. Like most managers before him at Gallowgate, Big Sam knows Harper would be first choice at plenty of other clubs in the Premiership but, with Given suffering from a minor heel injury, the United is happy to have such top-quality cover. He told the Chronicle: “Steve is top quality in my opinion but I know I can wake up feeling good and rest easily knowing that is an area in which we are covered well. “I know Steve is as good as Shay when he is called upon.” Harper made 25 appearances last term with Given missing large chunks of the season with a bowel injury and two groin strains. The Republic of Ireland international will be hoping for a much better year on the injury front, while Harper would be ecstatic to repeat the same amount of appearances this time around. Although the rivalry would create hostility in any other position, Allardyce says the harmony in the dressing room between the pair is impressive. Allardyce says: “Shay and Harps are like brothers, they have been here that long. “Harps will be happier than he as been before because he has played a lot more last season than in previous years. “Shay is disappointed because he has never had so many injuries than now. “However, I would maintain the goalkeepers are fighting healthily for that one place. “If Stevie comes in and plays well when Shay is out that is only healthy competition and that for me would be the type of big challenge for the gloves I like to see. “Certainly, with Shay playing so many games, you have to admire Steve for his loyalty and his patience at the club. “Shay is top quality and to replace him is a massive task.”
  17. ALLARDYCE is ready to plunge Mark Viduka straight in for his Newcastle debut at Bolton Wanderers in United’s Premiership opener in 18 days’ time. And this even though United’s signing from Middlesbrough only arrived back in England in the early hours of today after his exertions in the Asian Cup for Australia. Certainly, Allardyce shed no tears when the Aussies were knocked out of the Asia Cup after a penalty shoot-out with Japan in Hanoi on Saturday morning. And it means he has had a rethink about the burly striker after saying last month that he expected Viduka to miss the start of the season because he feared that the heat and humidity of the Far East would take such a toll on the 31-year-old striker. Allardyce told me today: “If he doesn’t start the Bolton Wanderers game, then he’ll be on the bench. “He is OK. All he’s doing is a pre-season away from us – he’s playing more games than anybody else. “When he comes back, he’ll be ready to go. “He’ll have had five or six games, and I’ll just say to him ‘look, just get involved in these games straight away’. “You know, where he’s playing now it’ll be only about 50% of the pace of the Premiership. “He’ll have to step up again as to the Premiership’s demands. He knows that as well as anybody, because he’s been here so long.” United are going to be a game down on the rest of the teams in the Premiership after their proposed first midweek match with Arsenal was put back – there is no new date – because the Gunners like Liverpool are involved in a Champions League qualifier. But Viduka will have looked at the fixtures and seen that, after the opening-day trip to Big Sam’s former stamping ground at the Reebok Stadium, United only have games at home to Aston Villa, at his former club Middlesbrough and against Wigan Athletic at St James’ Park before the first of the international breaks,. This led Allardyce to add: “Hopefully he’ll get us a couple of good results, and then he can have a rest in the international break, which starts on September 2. Because we haven’t got Arsenal in midweek, we’ve only got four games up until then. “If he can get involved in our opening four games, he can have a jolly good rest afterwards.” There is no rest for Allardyce as he continues to try and bring a couple of defenders into the club before he takes United to Bolton on August 11. But even for one of the biggest wheeler and dealers in the game in recent seasons, this is not proving to be easy. However, players are still ready to link themselves with United, no more so that Chinese international midfielder Zheng Zhi, who insists that Newcastle and Birmingham City want him.
