  14. CHRIS COLEMAN wants to take Newcastle United reserve-team coach and his former Fulham colleague Lee Clark with him to Spain. Coleman took over at Real Sociedad at the beginning of July, and the invitation for Clark to join him in San Sebastian has not been long in coming. It has left Clark torn on whether to stay with his beloved United or link up again with his big pal Coleman. Significantly, while Coleman has taken his long-time side sidekick Steve Kean with him to Real Sociedad, his former first-team coach at Craven Cottage, former United keeper Dave Beasant, has not gone. And it is this role that Coleman wants Clark to fill. Clark has already turned down the chance to join Kevin Bond, Glenn Roeder’s former No 2, at Bournemouth to stay at St James’ Park. But he could be excused for wondering whether a move to Spain might not be best for him in both the short and long-term. Clark is the archetypal Geordie, and Freddie Shepherd brought him back to United just before the start of season 2005-06 to show the club’s young players what it means to wear the black-and-white shirt and the following year he took over as reserve team coach from Tommy Craig. It has to be said that the move was a huge success and at first Roeder and then Sam Allardyce retained his services. But looking at the United bench at Hartlepool on Tuesday night it’s getting mighty crowded, and I gather Big Sam has not finished recruiting his back room staff. Clark has worked without a contract since he came back and, after his ill-fated move to Sunderland, he would think long and hard about leaving United again. But he has never made any secret that his big ambition in football is to manage Newcastle. And in my view, if he is to achieve this aim then he will have to move away from St James’ Park at some stage and make a name for himself as a manager. There are always going to be names in front of his as far as managing United is concerned, including his big pal Alan Shearer, and he needs to make a success elsewhere if he is to be sit in one of the hottest seats in football one day. Meanwhile, I expect Allardyce’s former European scout at Bolton, Dave Worthington, to take over a similar role at United in the near future.
  15. ALBERT LUQUE has redoubled his efforts to impress Sam Allardyce by training on his days off – but the Newcastle United boss insists he isn’t ready yet to figure in his pre-season programme, (writes LEE RYDER). Astonishingly, Allardyce has revealed that the former Deportivo la Coruna and Real Mallorca ace is still recovering from the hamstring injury he picked up almost two years ago when he limped off against Fulham on Michael Owen’s debut. The Spaniard actually went up the pecking order yesterday after Owen was hurt in a shooting practice with an injured thigh which will now rule him out until the Juventus game in eight days’ time. However, the Toon Army will have to wait a little longer to see Luque’s re-emergence despite extra efforts in training and the fact he scrapped his honeymoon after getting married a fortnight ago. Allardyce told the Chronicle: “Albert is still quite some way off because he missed the Austria trip. “We will now start seeing more of James Milner and Geremi but not Albert. “In Albert’s case, deconditioning players throws their injury risk right up. “We will monitor his fitness on a daily basis, and the medical team and sports science team come along and override you as a manager in terms of their expertise. “That’s why you must bring them in and listen to their advice. Otherwise you could throw a player in and they could have a 45% chance of getting injured. “So an injured player just goes backwards, which has been one of Albert’s problems over the last two years. “That extends back to the first few days of his career here when he severely tore his hamstring. “Even two years on he doesn’t feel like he’s at the level he was in Spain before he arrived. “I have to be patient and get him first to the physical level and then the mental level to see if he can adjust to the premiership"
