right, so who are we going to ring today and slap in a contract, all ready to move come the summer...

I'd love to think that was for a laugh, following Renton's comments about the random shit you post. I fear that would be giving you far too much credit though ;)

Again, I would not be surprised if people took it literally. The point being, when do we start contracting players ready for the first day of the summer window? Now? In 2 months? In May? Seriously, how far forward does it have to be to be good 'planning' and getting one over on every other manager who seem to be more than able to start and complete deals inside the window.

I'll accept having the players in time for the start of pre season training instead of after the season starts for a change.

Exactly. That's what pissed me off about Roeder big style last summer. When he took the job one of the first things he was saying was that he couldn't even afford a holiday because he has to assemble the squad for next season. The next thing was that he was off to Turkey for a couple of weeks. Then at some time in July he said that he has to sit together with Fat Fred and draw up a list of players they should go after.

The "planning" and concluding of deals just always depends on the circumstances. At the moment Newcastle now too well what type of players they need (I hope they do). So they can look at those players and sound them out or unsettle them. A lot is done behind the scenes. And when it's clear that the opportunity of getting one of your targets arises you have to react. Then it doesn't matter if it is January, April or June. But it shouldn't be July and only under the worst circumstances August 31st.

so you'd be happy if Arsene Wenger started having cosy little chats with N'Zogbia in a few months time?

Seriously Vic, are you doing this deliberately?

so am I limited in the amount of times I can disagree with someone now? Can we sort something out then? I'll start the bidding at 20 counter-arguments a day....

you honestly can't see a scenario whereby no matter how many players you target, none of the deals come off?

I really can't see the fuss over ringing people on the last day. It's deadline day FFS, by very definition the last day that you have a chance to complete deals. Why wouldn't you be ringing people

Again, when is he supposed to give up and stop calling, to appear professional and planned to the likes of gemma?

No I can't really see that scenario happening. I'm fully aware that we are not the club that everyone would like (and lots believe) but we're hardly Torquay now are we. Surely if we put out some feelers well in advance we would have time to work out who is interested (in selling/coming here) and then move on to other options if necessary.

And do you not think that by definition if you wait until the last day to try to make signings then you have lost the oppertunity for the player(s) to be at the club and settling to their new surroundings and actually playing games?

Sol Campbell is far better than anything we've got in that position. He'd also be a great influence on the youngsters in training working with a player of such calibre and experience. But he's over 30, so we didn't want him. Then we got Sibierski. :nufc:

Had missed too many games in the last couple of seasons too. Let's make an inquiry about Woodgate then.

has it not occured to anyone that Campbell might only be doing OK because he is not under any pressure, his last job before Pompey didn't exactly finish well did it? Playing at SJP would have undoubtedly sent him back to the looney bin

So, is he a headless chicken still? Or would that only be the case if he'd came here? ;)

going after the likes of campbell would be behaving like a headless chicken, not he is the headless chicken FFS

not really since he would have already been here last year if some moron in charge had of got their act together

sol campbell is the very definition of headless chicken. How many teams succeed by continously signing players for 1 or 2 years?

Sorry when you wrote the bit in bold I thought that's what you meant. I assumed the second part was a random afterthought. And who could blame me?

we didn't wait till the last day, it is quite clear none of the deals lined up earlier on panned out. We can still try other options until the last day, that's why it's called deadline day...

iirc Chelsea only sold someone on the last day because it was dependant on another late deal

transferring players any time in January is not going to allow them time to settle in is it?

Vic, I'm not suggesting for a minute it's easy to get the players you want in, but do you reckon our club (with the current regime) are good, average or plain shit when it comes to this sort of thing (taking all factors into account)? I think we're shit at it.

No one is saying that we have waited through the whole of January til we got to the last day before starting to do anything. What we are saying is if we had done things properly and started things off well before January started we would have known we had to change targets a lot earlier and give ourselves the time to do this. You can talk to other clubs outside the transfer window to find out if they would be receptive to bids for their players. Manure had Larsson lined up ages ago!

The point you make about the Cole/Gallas deal is fair enough but they could afford to wait because if it hadn't gone through they still would have had the quality in their teams to cover this. We do not and therefore shouldn't be relying on something like this.

If you transfer a playing on the 1st of January you have a whole month extra to bed someone in than you would on the 31st no? It would also mean they could have played in four or five more games. But that is irrelevant. Because if we had properly planned in the summer we wouldn't have been desperate for players now would we?

Take each case one at a time.

Campbell DID NOT want to come here.

On SSN about 4 months ago, Le Tiss and Thommo were discussing his move and talked about it as though they had spoken to him. Not the best source granted.

They said he had been to speak to a few clubs and was interested in a few offers but decided that working with Harry was what he needed, relaxed atmosphere, wanted to enjoy his foorball again as he had not been for months at Arsenal. If he came (as was rumoured) and had a chat to Glenn, he would have thought, this is a high pressure move.

Why anyone involved with the club would come out and say yes we wanted him but he turned us down is beyond me. How any of this points to ineptitude is beyond me. In fact this post is beyond me. ;)

I remember it being reported at the time Campbell did want to come here. Before he went to Pompey. (That's not definitely true, just what was reported). He's bound to say all the right things re: Portsmouth after he's signed though. I also remember Roeder saying he wasn't interested due to Campbell's injury record over the previous two seasons. He should have been interested in him imo.

Never heard Campbell express that or heard it reported like. I did hear he wasnt right in the head and that any sane person would not then move to Newcastle to resolve that one.

There are more subtle ways than that actually. But I expect someone like Wenger doing the necessary things if he wants to sign a player.

But I forgot, in your eyes we are Newcastle and nobody wants to sign for us anyway. We are not going to get a player ever. EVER. :nufc:

you talk as if every transfer is done soley by one club to the player directly and no other party is ever involved

In reality, if we contact a player in November (through his club via his agent which is the normal non-actionable way) then either, his agent will spark up and start to try and get a better deal out of his current club due to this 'new interest', or he will start phoning around other clubs in the hope of attracting a bidding war. Either way, nothing is likely to be done and dusted before the real deals can be done in the window. It happens this way for all levels and nationalities of transfer, and the exception is the special case where the player is definitely going to move and only to the buying club for a specific reason, i.e. Larson, Shearer, and the countless players that keep following a particular manager around different clubs.
