this photo still brings a lump to the throat even now as well as a massive trip down memory lane.

while I might envy their youth I feel genuinely sorry that younger generations never got to experience the atmosphere in the old leazes end. never bettered, nothing has come close. sadly missed.  :( :(

Quite right. That's why I'm all for a new stadium. SJP has never been the same since they took the roof off the Leazes end

Particularly nice if coppers were near you as you risked getting spat on

Or if full house someone pissing down your leg

Ahh happy days

I only ever knew the stumpy terrace that was intended to be in front of the extended stand around from the East. Would have loved to have experienced this.

I remember looking over at it as a nipper from the west stand and being both terrified and fascinated by it.
The crowd in there was like a huge single organism, moving and singing as one.

Also, fucking radge

Also, to my young mind, all the lads in there seemed to be wearing variations of this jumper,

I begged my Mam to get me one but was told no because it was “what the hooligans wore”.

I mean, she was right, but still… howay man Mother man.

Iwaa taken as a little'un in to the popular side nearest the gallowgate, then progressed to the west corner of the gallowgate when I was about 10. me old got tickets for the forest fa cup for me and me brother in the west stand paddocks. I remember the pitch invasion from the leazes like it was yesterday and being in awe.

me old man had never took us in there, was full of yobs who swore all the time apparently. pretty much sealed it for me that did, became my home for 4 years till they pulled it down. me feet had grown from monkey boot size to dr marten 6s, id spend an entire saturday morning with a tin of tuxen red polishing the fuckers till you could see your face in them, bright yellow laces long enough to wrap round a few times at the top... looked fucking nails man!

it was like a living entity, the noise the smell, the surges, the fueds between different parts of the town, the hostility towards the police, invading the pitch at the end of the game.

was both exciting and intimidating at the same time.... no better place to be as teenager.  :)

star jumpers, checky sports jackets, oxford bags or skinner jeans both only half way up to your knees. had to be short enough to see the air wear tag hanging out the back of your boots!

I had my heart set on getting a pair of black riders , waited for ages too, ( I didn’t realise at the time that it was because we were brassic ), eventually the day came and she took me in to Clark’s, and I couldn’t get the fucking things on!
Some flowery tart from Clark’s did some measurements of my feet and declared I had an “unusually high instep”, meaning I couldn’t get my riders.

She got me a pair of black monkey boots and I fucking them, because they weren’t riders.

My feet are still fucking mental, like.

oxford bags

Were they the pants with like a 5 button high waistband, and fuck-off big flares?

If so, aye, I wanted them too, only to get the same reply from Ma Fist as the jumper

was clarkes the big shop along from the black garter?

I had riders too, full of segs and black brouges became fashionable too. also had a pair of riders which had the broug patterns on the then, they were a yellowy colour. never had the riders which had straps on the sides instead of elastic.

but still, think I had more pairs of boots and shoes than imelda marcos, I must've driven me mam and dad round the bend!

I’ve mentioned this before but it ties in a bit with the above. Basically skinheads v rockers in the town in the early 70s. Back when skinhead culture was all about ska and reggae and Harringtons and Doc Martens and chinning anyone with long hair

I seem to recall the big flare at the bottom became less ludicrous, they were still baggy with a turn up on but more parallel.

bit bay city roller like, but without the tartan!

good documentary that, they did a follow up to it years later with same scotswood aggro boys which is worth seeking out.

by the mid 70s onwards football boot boys predominantly had long hair.
