Striker Heskey retires from international football

England striker Emile Heskey has announced his retirement from international football.

The 32-year-old was part of England manager Fabio Capello's much-criticised squad at the recent World Cup as they performed poorly in South Africa.

Heskey made his England debut against Hungary on 28 April, 1999 and earned 62 caps, scoring seven goals.

"I have enjoyed every moment of my England career and worn the shirt with pride when selected," he said.

"I would like to thank every manager I have played under, everyone at the FA and the fans for all their support over the years.

"I wish the management team and the playing squad all the best for the future."

Aston Villa forward Heskey was also part of the England squad's at 2002 World Cup as well as the 2000 and 2004 European Championships.

He scored in the group stages against Denmark in the group stages of the 2020 World Cup but failed to score in South Africa after starting against the United States and Algeria before coming on as a substitute against Slovenia and Germany.

Heskey divided opinion with his inclusion in Capello's starting line-up, with critics arguing his ability as a target man were not matcvhed by his finishing ability in front of goal.

And, despite teeing up Steven Gerrard for the opener in the 1-1 draw against the US, he also failed to take a gilt-edged chance to win the game for England late on.

More to follow.

Poor bloke. Nowhere near good enough to be selected (and played!) in the World Cup.

Took a lot of blame too, I'd hope England fans will fondly remember his part in the 5-1 Germany game(and other goals/highlights).

I nearly had a heart attack!! I opened this thread with one eye open hoping we werent after him!

He'd probably be the best forward at the club. Not saying much like.

I do feel a bit sorry for him, universally regarded as the epitome of incompetence except by successive England managers.

Then I remember he's paid thousands of pounds a week to be crap at kicking a ball around a pitch and has been allowed to embarrass himself in an England shirt for TEN FUCKING YEARS.

Fucking brilliant. For a start I don't have to listen to my dad go on. When I say he hates him, think how much Steven Lubbock's dad hates Michael Barrymore, then double it. From the title, I thought he was said to be coming to St. James' Park-a fate worse than death. He was useless. Utterly useless.

Fuck sake. This is the only thing that made England games watchable, seeing Heskey :jesuswept:

Wait, no, scratch that. They're watchable when they're getting thumped 4-1 by ze mighty germans.

with this and the fact that capello has said (like how he was picking form/fit players for the WC) that hes going to use more younger players in the euro quals im feeling oddly hopeful about england again, it wont last

I wouldnt swap Carroll for him.

Same here.

I'd even have Loven ahead of him at this point in his career.

Neither would I, primarily because of his age. I still stand by what I said though.
