The Fish 9193 Posted July 23, 2010 Share Posted July 23, 2010 NEWCASTLE United expect to clinch a season-long loan deal for Tom Cleverley as soon as Manchester United return from their North American tour next month. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed yesterday that the Red Devils are negotiating a loan with a Premier League club – and that is understood to be Newcastle, who have a long-standing interest in the England Under-21 international. Boss Chris Hughton made enquiries about Cleverley last season when he was excelling in a struggling Watford side, and believes the highly-rated midfielder can add competition to his experienced squad. Cleverley has illustrated his potential in the early games of Manchester United’s pre-season campaign, topping off a fine display by scoring in the defeat of Celtic last Friday. And while Ferguson has indicated he will look to Paul Scholes to anchor his midfield for one more season, Newcastle will offer him first-team games and an opportunity to play on a comparable stage to Old Trafford. Although Hughton continues to play his cards close to his chest, he did confirm to The Journal that he is interested in “top-class” loan players that become available. “We are looking at the loan market, and if someone becomes available who will add to our squad, of course we would be interested,” he said. “We have made our enquiries and we’re hopeful of bringing some in.” Confirming that Cleverley, along with fellow youngster Danny Welbeck – a target for Sunderland – will be loaned out to top-flight clubs this season, Ferguson said he had big expectations of a player they signed from Bradford City as a teenager. “Tom is a very talented boy. He is going to be a very good footballer. We are also considering putting him on loan to a premier division team,” he said. “He improved tremendously in his spell at Watford last year. He got an unfortunate injury towards the end of last season and was out for a long time. “He has just come back and can play anywhere in midfield, which is always an advantage.” While trying to broker a loan deal for Cleverley, Hughton is also considering letting some of his crop of talented youngsters leave to get more first-team experience. There have been no shortage of takers so far this summer – Leeds and Carlisle are keen on Nile Ranger, while Burnley want goalkeeper Fraser Forster. Kazenga LuaLua, Ryan Donaldson and even Tamas Kadar could also be loaned out, with Hughton hoping to secure at least Championship football for most of his players. “We don’t need to make a decision yet on Nile and the others,” he said. “We’re only a couple of weeks into pre-season and we really want to look at them first before deciding what’s going to happen with them. “Nile has come back from the summer in really strong shape and so has Kazenga LuaLua. Tamas Kadar was looking excellent until he picked up his injury too. “It may be the case that we will let them go because we feel they would be better served by regular first-team football. I think we’d be talking Championship level for someone like Nile, who did well for us at that level last season, and the same goes for the others. “But we have not made a firm decision. They are our players and we will take a decision that benefits us rather than being rushed into anything by other clubs who obviously would like to take them as well.” Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It perpetuates the cycle of clubs like manure and chelsea stockpiling players and hedging their bets. Much better for the good of the game that they have to make a decision on the player. You'd prefer that we give practice to players from other clubs? as opposed to their futures being decided when they're 20? the system works to the advantage of both clubs if we signed cleverly for a season on loan then we're getting a player for our team as good as our midfield for a year and man u get to see how he develops as opposed to us signing no-one because there isnt the money to spend and a hole being left in our piss weak midfield Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

None. Only 1 or 2 of the ones sold were capable of playing for a top premier league club, mind Given, Owen, Milner, Bassong............all playing for clubs which qualified for europe .............. Throw in N'Zogbia, Viduka, Martins, Beye.................only 6 or 7 more loan signings/cheap over the hill/bargain basement signings to go. Isn't this exciting. You wouldn't have richer teams having huge squads. In fact, it would encourage teams to bring through young players rather than lash out on ready made stars knowing that they can rely on farm teams to develop their kids.
