There's a reason no team plays like that. What are you talking about? I'm talking about the midfield dropping back and where they should be. Not individual defensive responsabilities. What we have now is Anita running from side to side like a windmill. It might have escaped your notice the 20 odd games this season but Pardew plays zonal responsability already where players regardless of where the ball is hold positon. It would work better if weren't always one light due to the two clowns upfront. I also sense that Pardews tinkering means he is looking at ways to bridge over to a more central game. You arrange to the first pass of their attacking phase. Arrigo Sacchi AC Milan. You might remember him. The way we defend now players are getting isolated because none of the midfield apart from Tiote (who has to be everyehere) knows what their responsabilities are. (Hatem and Guti track back haphazardly). If their first pass is long then the def is responsible. If it's short than the midfield close down. It's about tempo and zones. What we play now is about neither. What we play now ALLOWS A HUGE amount of space in our midfield which means sides come onto us utilising 2 defenders as well as the whole oof thier midfield. The space that is left behind santon and Simpson when they lose the ball, which they do about 50% of the time they attack. At least Jonas is there atm to cover for Santon. In that formation santon gets up the pitch, tries to beat a man and loses the ball to their full back. Barcelona can pull it off because their team consists of the best players in the world. Trying to play zonally with our current side is suicide. Danny Simpson, for instance, would struggle to mark a traffic cone, so expecting him to operate zonally with movement may be a stretch too far. Doesnt zonal marking just apply at the back though, according to the coaching manuals?....as far as I can make out Parky is basically on about what happens when we lose the ball in the centre of the park...having said that, J69 sums up what happened v Fulham with Santon perfectly. We already play a type of positional responsability. It's why all and sundry moan about movement. The games coming up we should never defend with less than 7 and attack with more than 3. Well, he said pretty much the opposite after the Fulham game iirc. Its a well known managerial tool, pretend that you're just greatful to be on the same pitch. Bob Paisely, Jock Stein and the early career Alex Ferguson were experts at it. We wont be taking many scalps this way though, since we set up so negatively. The best teams will be given the ball and told to do something with it. Something they are usually quite capable of..
