I thought the first two Spidermen were rubbish personally, so after hearing that fans of them weren't impressed with the third I've never been motivated to see it. I think the bubble has definitely burst for the superhero genre, although I'm looking forward to the next Batman.

Another Batman

have you watched Batman Begins? it's not the high camp of th recent shit, nor is it the über camp of Adam West and co.

I saw it a couple of times at the cinema, once with my dad who hates everything sci-fi/fantasy/bizarre and even he said it was a good film.

Batman begins was decent, the rest were abysmal

well the guys who made the sole batman film that you've deemed dub "decent" are making a second.

so perhaps Jesus should bite back the tears for a bit?

.. I'm maybe a little too protective of a juvenile's fictional characters

The Departed - Better the second time round, still overrated though.

i thought it was class peronally. scorsesee's best effort since goodfellas imo

I thought it was class too. I really liked 'Infernal Affairs' and it was a blatant rip-off, taking almost whole scenes iirc, although I don't think it claimed to be anything other than a rip-off really. It was brilliant regardless. Not sure about it being overrated but I've never heard anyone say they didn't like it. Great cast too. I think Mark Walhberg is underrated btw.

I don't think it was as good as Bringing Out The dead.

Never seen that. Might get it tonight if it's on filmflex

300 - It's ok like. I got a bit a bit bored with it tbh. And did anyone else think it was camp as a row of tents?

It's taken the "TopGun" title iyam.

Dark Days - Absolutely class. Two years in the making it is all black and white documentary footage taken by Marc Singer who lived with the homeless people who lived in the tunnels beneath Penn Station in New York. Pretty dark and depressing at times it's an amazing insight into the lives of the people down there.

Bought on eBay from your recommendation :D What really puts it into perspective is shown in the "making of" extra on the dvd. About 45 mins of how Marc Singer pulled together the film, beg, stole borrowed etc. The "life after the tunnel" is also an emotional set of write-ups of each of the homeless. Top dvd

Hostel 2

I loved the first Hostel. It was a simple premise executed well, unlike that shitty Saw film that was a hugely contrived premise executed poorly. But I still wasn't that keen to see Hostel 2. Even people that liked the first one said it was poor, and I agree to a certain extent. The first half hour sort of drags along because we know where these girls are headed, the same place as the lads in the first film. There's no tension in their travels until they actually arrive at the hostel and what tension is then evoked is simply from guessing who's going to survive and anticipating the carnage.

The main problem though, I think, is introducing the torturers/murderers as characters. We don't want or need to know anything about them. They should be inpenetrable monsters, this is a problem with horror sequels, they always try and study the baddie more, what made Hannibal Lector into what he is? Does Jaws have a family? The more you know about the mechanics of the hostel, the less scary it is.

On the plus side some of the torture had me squirming in my seat like I've not done in a long while. When the lass had the bloke in the palm of her hand (literally) I was doubled over in sympathy for him. It still has some of the bite of the first one in terms of both social and international politics (SPOILER****New Orleans and Iraq are both covered as well as the standard horror trope of cock teases and whores coming to a grizzly end while virginal innocents win the day***END SPOILER) but it's all a bit more ham fisted in this episode and tacked on to what is basically a carbon copy of part one. What is especially confused is that unlike part one, the girls in this episode do nothing wrong whatsoever, they're simply prey, so any idea of action and consequence outside of giving up the poon is limited only to the killers.

The fact that part 3 is confirmed is worrying, I really hope Roth takes a completely different approach because the holidaying Americans being killed after getting in over their heads was enough for one film only. Part 2 passed 90 entertaining minutes but he needs to raise the bar to make it a worthwhile trilogy rather than one quality film turned cash cow.
