Newcastle United vs Bradford City

I can't think of a reason why he would play Lascelles when Thiaw hasn't really been getting much game time.

It's the perfect opportunity to give Thiaw more time on the pitch. Either with a view to picking him for Arsenal or just giving him a run out before you bring Schar back in. I assume Schar hasn't had much training time since last Thursday, so probably the former.

I am in two minds on this. Thiaw and Botman need game time, but equally this is a prime opportunity to also give Lascelles some game time.  Then if the shit hits the fan, at least he has some game time under his belt.

I would definatley fully rest BDB.  I wouldn't even have him in the squad tonight. He needs some time off.  We should have enough with Krafu, Botman, Thiaw to cover the CB.

My lineup would be;

------------Ramsdale

Krafth---Lascelles---Botman---Hall

------Miley----Bruno----Willock

Elanga--Osula---Gordon

Reason being for Elanga, I think it would do him the world of good to get an assist or a goal.  He's been hooked a couple of times when he has been decent.

Woltemade.  He needs to get up to speed still and build on his fitness but I think rest him for this.

Lascelles doesnt need game time, he's our fifth choice CB at best, maybe even 6th.

I hear you. But what happens if Schar and Burn have injuries this season due to the amount of fixtures? As people have said. Its a squad game and we are playing Bradford at home.

i think we're going to see heavy rotation. this is a league one side. it's exactly the sort of game where lascelles, krafth and osula should get minutes.

we will keep the big guns on the bench in case we need to win the game in the second half but the important match game is on sunday

You play three and four, perhaps five, before you play six.

I don't fully agree, this isn't to say I don't like lascelles but I don't think we should be using a relatively "easy" game on him when we have others to play. Thiaw needs english game time, botman needs regular minutes in his legs.

We won this competition last season by taking it seriously, and I don't think we should (or will) disrespect it by rotating so heavily that we're that far down in our pecking order.

Thiaw has had less than 2 hours of first team football for us this season. There's no reason to not play him other than "he might get injured" which isn't a reason not to play someone or you'd never pick anyone.

I agree, which is why I've resigned myself to the fact that he'll pick Lascelles alongside Botman tonight. Isn't Thiaw in at the weekend with Schar being out? I don't think Howe risks it.

he is a league cup asset, as are krafth and oslua - these are the players who won't get many PL minutes but will give the first stringers a rest. eddie has rotated heavily in the early rounds of this competition before when we have come up against lower league opposition. i expect he'll do the same against bradford

I'd agree with that, but I just don't have any faith in Lascelles any more. Even against League One Bradford City.

Bradford are flying at the moment. They'll have a decent following too.

unbeaten in 15 IIRC. Howe will absolutely not want a Grimsby situation on his hands, it’s going to be a strong enough team where there’ll be no room for excuses if we lose IMO

he was great before he did his knee after playing like a donkey for the cabbage. he didn't look out of place against psg and seemed to be another one that had benefitted from the eddie howe treatment. he should be fine for a game such as this.

Schar is out of this and the Arsenal game under concussion protocols.  I'd imagine Thaiw will start against Arsenal so Lascelles may get the nod tonight.  Although I think I'd be happier to see Thaiw get more game readiness in preparation for Sunday than I would seeing Lascelles get a bit game time.
