  3. Striker Michael Owen believes Newcastle can still qualify for Europe despite their indifferent start to the season. The Magpies won just one of their first nine Premier League games, but back-to-back home wins over West Brom and Aston Villa have elevated them to 14th. "We know we're a decent team and we were in a temporary position," he said. "If we have a decent run to the end of the season, and we'd expect that with the players we have, then fifth, sixth or seventh is by no means impossible." Owen is United's leading scorer this season with five goals, although he has not scored since netting a penalty in the 2-1 home loss to Blackburn in September. But he believes his side will maintain their recent form when they visit Fulham on Sunday. "With our back-to-back wins we're going there thinking we're capable of taking something from the game," said Owen, who has dropped out of the England squad under new boss Fabio Capello. "It's still early in the season and a couple of wins shoots you up the table, the last two results have shown that. "And we are confident we can continue to climb." "It's still early in the season and a couple of wins shoots you up the table, the last two results have shown that. "And we are confident we can continue to climb." Owen also praised the stabilising influence of much-maligned interim manager Joe Kinnear. "He has steadied the ship," he said. "In every form of life you need to answer to one person - just to get a focal figure and know where the buck stops. Now we've got that and now we've had some good results as well."

He penned the books Congo, Twister and the popular Jurassic Park trilogy, all of which were adapted into films. He also created the long-running US hospital drama ER and his books have sold more than 150 million copies. "He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched," his family said in a statement. Crichton has won an Emmy, a Peabody, and a Writer's Guild of America Award for ER. A private funeral service is expected.

  14. Harry Redknapp's new regime at Tottenham appears to have begun with his pursuit of Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. The Newcastle goalkeeper is unhappy at the constant turmoil on Tyneside and is ready to make a move when the transfer window opens. Toon owner Mike Ashley wants to cash in on his top stars before he sells the club and knows Given is one of the club's most highly prized assets. And new Spurs boss Redknapp has confirmed he would be interested in the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper if he becomes available. Redknapp said: 'Shay Given is a great goalkeeper who I admire. Any manager would have to be interested in him if he became available.' Sources close to Given - who would command a £7 million fee - insist he is ready to leave Tyneside in the New Year in an attempt to join a successful club. A close friend of Given said: 'Shay has always stated he is happy at Newcastle but the simple fact of the matter is he wants to win things. Although it will hurt him to do so, he is ready to leave Newcastle to achieve that. 'And he would be more than happy to go to a club like Tottenham where the club's potential under Harr is clearly enormous.'
  15. Not hugely blown away by it so far, I've turned the 3d match do-dah off already, the interviews seem like a chore rather than anything that adds to the game.
  16. The London-based businessman fronting the Nigerian bid to buy Newcastle United has reacted angrily to suggestions that the offer is not real. Chris Nathaniel branded comments by Keith Harris - the man tasked with selling the club - that no Nigerian consortium existed as "stupid". "We have had Nigerians that don't exist and South Africans told by the media that they were bidding," Harris said. A group of South African businessmen have also been linked with the club. "I really can't get my head around why anyone would make such a stupid statement," Nathaniel told BBC Sport. [My clients] will be very disappointed and very angry [with these comments]." "The bid certainly still exists. We're currently getting a financial adviser on board to take the bid forward with Newcastle." There's no shortage of takers that will take their [the Nigerian bidders] money for a football club Chris Nathaniel Nathaniel also said that his unnamed Nigerian clients may take their money elsewhere. "There's no shortage of takers that will take their money for a football club. "They're businessmen, they want to get a club in the Premiership and it doesn't necessarily have to be Newcastle. "Newcastle are not the only club available." Harris, chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce, said two "very serious" foreign investors have emerged as contenders to buy the club. He would not name those involved but said he hoped a sale would be concluded by early next year. The club was put up for sale in September by owner Mike Ashley, who is thought to be asking in the region of £250m ($400).

  18. Delph would be a huge steel, he looks an amazing prospect.
  19. Seymour Pierce chairman Keith Harris claims two 'very serious' candidates have emerged as possible buyers of Newcastle. Harris is brokering the sale of Newcastle after he was appointed in September by current owner Mike Ashley to identify potential buyers for the Tyneside outfit. Harris refused to identify the interested parties, but is hopeful that a sale will go through before the end of the year or early in the new year. "We have two very serious contenders to buy it," Harris said at the FT Sport Industry Summit in London. Seven parties were reported to be interested in buying Newcastle and Harris has admitted it has been a hard job trying to sort out a deal. "We have had Nigerians that don't exist, and South Africans told by the media they were bidding," added Harris. "The truth of the matter is that the phone has rung several times, frequently because I have made the calls - but they have reacted to them. "It is not easy doing anything in this world whether it's selling a football club or anything else, but it will come through."
