  9. I think .com's comments sum it up perfectly for me: Inevitable departure: Kieron conclusion Regardless of the Joey Barton injury blow, the Newcastle United career of Kieron Dyer looks to be drawing to a close, with three clubs now rumoured to be interested in signing him. After some open-ended comments from West Ham boss Alan Curbishley over the weekend, the names of Spurs and Manchester City were added to the mix by Monday's papers. When asked on Saturday if Dyer had played his last game for the club, Allardyce commented: "Kieron Dyer hasn't said anything to me. We've got no bid. If we do get a bid, then it might be his last game for Newcastle but we've got no bid." From our own perspective, we're happy to see him go. Quite simply, eight years of unrealised potential for whatever reason is just enough for us - if someone is prepared to pay his daft wages and give us a fee, then good luck to them. The alternative prospect of two more years as he sees out his contract and becomes eligible for a testimonial is deeply unpalatable. So much of what can be termed "the old guard" at SJP has been swept away by the massive off-field changes in recent months - for us, the departure of Dyer is a necessary part of the onfield revolution.

  12. Agreed, it was a very good fight, best fighter won but I thought the scoring was a bit wild, looks like he might be fighting Calzaghe next if Calzaghe beats Kessler later in the year, Now Calzaghe Vs Hopkins could be a fantastic fight.

  16. A Patriot surface-to-air missile has been found in a Florida scrapyard. Workers at the yard, in Ybor City, Tampa, called police to say they'd found a "torpedo", reports Metro News. Experts were drafted in from the nearby MacDill Air Force Base, who quickly identified the object as a Patriot. They said that it was harmless, as it was missing its warhead. MacDill spokesman Lt. Omar Villarreal confirmed that the missile did not contain "the part on top that goes boom". However, the missile still had its rocket motor and guidance system. Experts suggested it could have been a model used for training purposes. Patriot missiles are the main surface-to-air missile system used by the American military, and first came to prominence when they were used to shoot down Iraqi Scud missiles during the 1991 Gulf War.

    Barton

Talked that up ! The Sunday Times: Barton slips into talisman role for Newcastle Carlisle 1 Newcastle 1 Simon Rushworth at Brunton Park ANOTHER Saturday afternoon and another Newcastle United team-sheet missing its most famous name. Supporters of the black and white cause have become used to the regular, and often sustained, absences of Michael Owen during the England forward’s two unproductive campaigns on Tyneside, but a familiar situation becomes no less painful with time. After the serious injuries of the past, a thigh strain should cause little concern, but Newcastle’s fans have long since learned to err on the side of caution as far as their favourite-in-waiting is concerned. With neither Owen nor the former England Under21 forward Shola Ameobi available to face League One promotion hopefuls Carlisle United, Newcastle’s manager, Sam Allardyce, asked the unsettled duo Kieron Dyer and Obafemi Martins to carry the weight of the Magpies’ attack alongside the Academy graduate Andy Carroll. All three spurned first-half opportunities but it was the identity of the visiting captain which proved the most curious aspect of a keenly-contested friendly. Joey Barton, on police bail as an investigation into his alleged assault on former teammate Ousmane Dabo continues, does not appear to be the best-equipped leader of a traditionally disparate dressing room. Where Barton was tipped to succeed renowned trouble-makers Craig Bellamy and Lee Bowyer as the Gallowgate End’s new antihero, it is increasingly apparent that Allardyce sees the England international as a possible heir to Alan Shearer. Whether the armband inspires maturity remains to be seen but Newcastle’s £5.8m close-season capture barely put a foot wrong during 69 minutes of controlled aggression. What else Allardyce learned from this necessary exercise in preseason match fitness remained unclear. The Czech Republic international centre-half, David Rozehnal, was rarely asked to break sweat against an earnest yet limited Carlisle strikeforce. However, the £2.9m summer signing from French side Paris St Germain was one of several Newcastle defenders at fault when the Carlisle defender, Danny Livesey, opened the scoring for the home team in the 56th minute with a powerful header. Cameroon international Geremi made his Newcastle debut 12 minutes later and the midfielder, signed from Chelsea this summer, immediately tested Carlisle’s goalkeeper, Keiren Westwood, with a trademark free kick. But it was the Peruvian midfielder, Nolberto Solano, who salvaged some pride for the Magpies with a fine right-footed volley in second-half stoppage time. Carlisle United: Westwood; Raven, Livesey, Murphy, Aranalde; Bridge-Wilkinson, Thirlwell, Smith; Gall, Hackney, Graham. Substitutes: Howarth, Lumsdon, Carlton, Joyce, Arnison, McDermott, Dalton, Kirkup Newcastle United: Harper; Carr, Rozehnal, Ramage, N’Zogbia; Butt, Solano, Barton; Martins, Carroll, Dyer. Substitutes: Milner, Geremi, Huntington, Forster, Krul, Bertram, Francis, Lough, LuaLua, Troisi Scorers: Carlisle United: Livesey 56 Newcastle United: Solano 90 Referee: M Pike
  20. I don't really think there is an huge gulf in our opinions of Shola, I don't hate the lad, far from it, I'd be delighted to see him get 15-20 goals this season, as I would any of our playing staff, the thing I find frustrating in some respects is the amount of patience some folk have for him. The one thing I believe Ameobi has proven is that he's a squad player, a benchwarmer, but little more, not a player that deserves a regular start unless injury to the likes of Owen, Martins or Viduka forces it, Ameobi is a tryer, he'll graft and give his all, which is more than some do, but I feel his best isn't good enough. Judging by some of the tranfer threads, there are those amongst us that wouldn't mind seeing Martins leave at the right price as they seem to have already made their minds up about him following his debut season, yet Shola seems to get this sympathetic treatment, and from some folk undying patience that one season he might finally produce the goods, the title of this thread is a case in point, "Could this be his season ?" his season to do what ??? He's 26 this year, he's no longer a prospect, he's what he is, he's not going to develop into a world class player now, he's a 4th choice striker, thats his level in my opinion, I wish the lad all the luck in the world, I don't hate him, far from it, I just don't think he's very good.
