Aaron Hughes was a very good utility player and at his best would get a game for us now in either central defence,left back,right back,or as a holding midfield player.The same goes for Steve Watson.Maybe this is just a sign of how poor we are in certain ( most ) postions.Back to Shola.You are spot on when you say we had him forced on us for ten years when he should have been shipped out very early into his career.For ten years whenever we had an injury to a striker,Shoala always seemed to be the answer in many managers eyes yet proved he was rarely the answer ,and on and on it went for a decade.

He `struggled' for a number of reasons.He never adapted to the hustle and bustle of the prem .He never fancied fighting fire with fire on this front.He couldn't win a header to save his life.It looked like he didn't want to win headers.His positional play was awful.This had nothing to do with moving from one league to another.Many on here wanted him to be given a chance at fulback.No reasons why mind.He was and he was equally rubbish.His admirers on here now say he was rubbish at fulback because he was being played out of position .I would like a reason or reasons why a player who was so shit for us has so many people defending him for being so shit,without saying he was shit.It seems none of it was down to him.

If he does return next summer when his contract expires,he may well sign for a championship club ( us or the makems ? ) and will again be a squad player.In his prime he wouldn't have been a regular in a top half championship team.

If you haven't understood what defending is all about at 25 you never will.Our defence could get a lot worse by the way because Santon will soon be fit.

I only saw the highlights on MOTD but what was noticable was how often Janmaat was totally clueless at defending.Centre Parting was poor at defending but Janmaat has brought poor defending to a higher ( lower ) level.
