Sounds like the striker loans were only discussed towards the end of the window, with a few bids made earlier on which came to nothing. I guess none came within the budget Ashley set him and I respect that Hughton didn't get a striker in just for the sake of having another, if he's no better than the players already here (I'm sure whoever he had in mind is better than Ameobi and Best with that said).

Going to be fascinating to see how he adjusts not just to the club, but to the English game as a whole. Like the article states, we can only hope that leaving France and making a fresh start over here will improve his temperament and consistency levels.

No, I don't think Hughton wanted another striker in the first place.

My issues with Hughton's management. 1.) He's not ruthless enough. Certain players get too much gametime. 2.) He constantly bemuses me with his choice of substitutes. Always seems to leave our pace players on the bench when they could add a lot to the team towards the end of matches. 3.) He/we didn't get another striker in. Massive problem to be honest. Aside from Carroll, our usual strikers are either unproven or just not good enough. We can't rely on him and I don't want us to play with 1 man up front anyway. My third reason casts major doubt over our ability to stay in this league to be honest. I don't want to think what it'll be like if we end up relying on the likes of Best and Ameobi to score us goals.

Well if you want to look at it that way then there is nothing to prove you arent right (just seems less likely to me) but i take the point about modern footballers in general. My optimistic view is that he wanted a team where he could shine, a sporting challenge in a new league to escape the constant media attention in France and the non-stop debate over his actions on and off the pitch. I also want to believe that we are profiting from the Shepherd era where this club was elevated to the top tier of European football, we signed Ginola and Robert, we established connections with great European clubs and the reputation of our support is known amongst people who Ben Arfa is known to have discussed the move with (Cantona) and those who live in Marseilles in the summer (Beye, Cisse). Thats mostly pure speculation from me, apart from the Cantona bit. I think he has looked at us and seen a fit. Whether he can live up to his reputation (as a gifted footballer) with us remains to be seen. Interesting angle reg Beye and Cisse and another thing, to French players of this type the ambience of a club is as important as its stature, a starlet like Bafra thrives on the right kind of supporter and the right kind of passion which is what we almost alone in the PL are all about. Seriously? We desperately need another striker tbh. Ameobi and Best aren't good enough, and Ranger and Xisco have a lot to prove. We can't rely on Carroll. If he gets injured, as things stand, we'll be in trouble. I'd take any half decent striker, loan or permanent move. Another LB would be nice but another striker is more important. Hughton probably thinks the likes of Ameobi are good enough, sadly.
