Generic small time football blather thread FOREVER
Rayvin replied to Sonatine's topic in Newcastle Forum
Ha, interesting one. I don't think it's a question about being braver - Gueye's stance on homosexuality won't define him as a person so he won't have been struggling with it every day of his life in the same way that Daniels might have in a football context. He made his statement for one day and then went back to living normally again. There's no question it takes more guts for Daniels to do what he did after a lifetime of possible stigma. That said, bravery aside, Gueye can have his views. As long as he's still compassionate with individuals and isn't actively hating or causing harm to anyone - and as much as I disagree with him - I don't really see him as a problem. I think the concept behind his view is problematic socially - i.e. the notion that people should be 'disagreed with' on the basis of something that they can't change about themselves - this can only be damaging IMO. The battle we need to win there, and that we are winning tbh, isn't going to be achieved by lambasting a single Muslim footballer who isn't making a big statement and who probably doesn't think too hard about such things. But for consistency, I then have to acknowledge that it's the same for any Christians who feel the same way. Not actively causing harm is the main thing, I think? -
Liberty is about the only thing they'll be able to pivot to. "We want a country free to be as blindly fucking stupid as it wants to be - no one will ever tell an Englishman that he can't shoot his own foot before taking a hacksaw to what's left of it, and subsequently throwing it at a foreigner while singing No Surrender! For they will be emboldened by a government that did the exact same thing to its own country!"

I see the Reuben brothers are in at number 3. Everyone in the top 20 has north of £8bn. Who needs that much money man, what can they possibly do with it that needs them to have that much. I'm close to posting that infographic again about how utterly obscene it all is.

While it's amusing, I don't actually care that much what happens to them. I think they are more likely to succeed this time but that's mostly because Wycombe have been in my head as a 'minor team' forever, and so I'm judging it based entirely on that. We are now a completely different calibre of club to them. We always were IMO, but it's more pronounced now. They could be a single position below us in the premier league and they'd still be League One as far as the relative stature of the two clubs goes.

I honestly don't see Leeds getting a win at Brentford and Burnley can afford to lose to us as long as Leeds can only draw. -

Thanks for keeping us all invested in it though - as much as it's disappointing that it wasn't to be, it's been good craic for half the season -

On the plus side, we may as well fuck up Burnley now. Not arsed about losing to them for the sake of throwing Leeds out. -

Ah well, 70 years of not being relegated set to continue. Was fun while it lasted. Leeds are done then. -

A draw doesn't help them if Burnley win tonight or draw/beat us. They need to win this, they'll have to go for it. EDIT - was thrown by the BBC's stupid live update league table not being quick enough. Burnley will need to win tonight or against us, a draw won't be enough for them. You'd still say they're more likely to come out of that positively than Everton away at Arsenal though. Arsenal who have to win, I might add. -

Christ, would I prefer Everton to go down or £350... I actually genuinely think I'd take Everton going down. -

I mean I don't think he's that invested anymore honestly, he just likes to complain about how shite they are. -

I should be so lucky (on the money, not his health) He remarried a woman nearer in age to me than she is to him, no chance of any inheritance from that situation. And no I just mean he worries about it most seasons and honestly I think it might actually do him good to no longer have to dread it -

My dad's team too, but I still want them to go down Tbh he's been expecting it for about as long as I've been alive, they've been shit for that long. Might finally put him out of his misery. -

A draw won't be enough for Everton here, nothing changes unless they win. Leeds will still overtake them with a win if they get a point. -

If we're thwarted by the ineptitude of Leeds after Burnley's daring escape, it's going to be a huge fucking let down. -

Aye - if Burnley win today though it makes no difference whether we beat them or not irrespective of what happens for the other two. If Everton beat Arsenal then they're staying up either way. Burnley lose today and we're stuck with potentially having the fate of Everton football club on one hand, and beating Burnley for the hell of it in the other. -

They're taking it well... [Poor language removed] this 5 back off Frank you clueless weapon [Poor language removed] this. Absolutely [Poor language removed] disgraceful They are corrupt as F these refs; had that yellow out straight away. If an Everton player does that it's red...We are down...it's done...I'm done with these C; they can just F off. Omg I'm going to cry, how am I going to work with us losing the game If there was any slither of doubt that this game wasn’t fixed, I think we can lay that discussion to rest now -

So we want Burnley to win I guess since that means we can beat them on final day without it keeping Everton up. Can't believe it's going to the wire like this after they beat Chelsea ffs -
Why are we so determined to move Dubravka on, I don't get it. I can't recall a single point in this season where I thought "if only we had a better keeper". He's not good enough for the future maybe but I really don't get why he's being ushered out the door ahead of others.
-
I would imagine Henderson is relevant to the 'home grown' consideration since by the sounds of it we'll be fielding a half Brazilian team by the time we've got a couple more windows under our belt.
-
I mean tbh I feel like they've been lowering expectations from the start anyway - yes there was talk of winning things but it was very much pitched as a 10 year project as far as winning the league goes. I actually don't think it would take that long if we spent well (assuming City and Liverpool current generations slide into decline together) but they've not said at any point that they were going to throw money around as far as I can recall?
-
I especially like the bloke who rules himself out because volunteers have to be over 17 and he'll have his niece with him How does her presence prevent you from waving a bit of cloth around you fuckwit.
-
I predict one of two things: 1 - It won't be as incriminating as we hoped, but will represent the bare minimum level of police effort to draw a line under it. 2 - If it is as incriminating as we hope, it won't really matter anyway.
-
It's an interesting one because if we don't spend ambitiously we'll be less able to sell the vision of a 'project' to these players at the level we need to bring in - equally though I really don't think we are going to do a Man City here despite what the world seems to think. If we can get Targett, Nunez (or similar), Paqueta and a centre back, then I think tbh we've probably achieved all we need to for this window. £150m maybe if we're clever? If we go for a keeper maybe more like £200m.
