I have known a lot of truly intelligent people in my time, having spent the best part of 10 years in a high-level academic environment and mixing daily with consultants and professors to this day. Not to mention many people without a qualification to their name but who are obviously still incredibly bright. One thing I have noticed about intelligent people is they never boast about their academic achievements or their intelligence at all - they don't have to because they don't feel intellectually insecure, which bez obviously does. Now, I am aware that at times I, and others on here I could mention, can come across as a bit arrogant, superior or aloof on this forum, something that can cause me regret when I reread my posts in the cold light of day. Ironically, from a personal point of view, I see the the most poverty amongst white people. Well, the only people on the thread that think that the treatment of our players on the pitch depends on their race seem to be bez and Bridget. They're entitiled to their opinions, but it is interesting that everyone else disagrees. Personally, I am completely confident I'm not a racist, in the same way that I am confident enough about my sexuality that I am not "afraid" of homosexuals. I think most people think like this now, thank God. And that is surely the way forward. Maybe for once we should realise how far we have come forward without panicking about how far we have still to go.

Because most workplace interviews are based on a half hour chat and a CV. When you can't decide, then I think swaying towards a non-white or non-male applicant is valid for the sake of workplace equality (or if it's a job predominantly done by womer, err towards giving it to a male applicant). Getting into a team is based on years of past knowledge of a player and what they're going to bring. You're never going to think two places are the same. Throughout the rest of the club positive discrimination should be encouraged. A few years back every member of bar-staff in the Leazes was 'non-white' as much as I encourage positive discrimination, half of them couldn't even speak English and were incapable of doing the job well. But to steer it back on topic a bit re: positive descrimination, would it be acceptable to play a black footballer at SJP simply because he was black, when there was an equally good, or better, white player available? In my experience the biggest inequalities in this country are based on class, not necessarily sex or race, although this undoubtedly exists. But strangely I think football is one area where there is little racism in terms of employment at least - black footballers are hardly a rarity, are they? In fact the number of black players is disproportionate to their population, I am pretty sure.

The crowd is getting worse at SJP. Its like listening to bairns playing Championship Manager. Walk up to the ground and you here SKYSPORTS soundbites. "This one is WORLD CLASS - CNZ" (and he was poor today- one or two touches and people start rolling over themselves to honour him-in two months they will have him as scapegoat) Sheep? Unfortunately that is too true. I still go to other grounds when i cant get to away games. Places like Norwich, Ipswich, Sheffield Wed, Crewe, Luton etc have a core of proper fans who have been there for years. They understand the club AND its history (before the bairns start - 4 of those have won trophies more recently than us). Better astmosphere. Less spoilt. Ours is getting an embarrassment.
