I don’t think Ashley is “lying to buy himself time” as he’s shown time and again he doesn’t care how things look to the outside world. I don’t know how much cash we have, but his approach seems to be that we only spend what is in the tin to cover outgoings. We seem to be the only club that takes that approach. Which puts us out of touch with the likes of Brighton and Huddersfield. It wont take us forward and will in all likelihood lose us benitez.

I’m with Gloomy on this issue. Replacing Lascelles with someone of similar quality and with the same leadership ability/club impact would be difficult. Not least cos he’s English, a good character and well settled at the club. Then theres the issue of who we can realistically attract, regardless of what money is made available to be rreinvest in new players. Im sure Benitez would be happy to sell - he said as much recently - if it was for big big money that he got to spend. Thats probably more like sammynb big money than 30 mill though. I think there’ll be a lot of speculation like this, given his obvious talent. I’m not going to shit the bed about it, all our players are permanently for sale under this regime

I also dont get where these debt free bollocks comes from. Theyve got players on huge contracts who havent fucked off and by all accounts they still owe Sizeable deferred transfer payments. We saw from our own books what a financial disaster one season of relegation was for us; they’ve had a double relegation to a league with fuck all money in it. They’ll quickly run up a heap of debt with no way to pay it back even if theyre debt free on day one. If they slash and burn their costs it will be hard to get back up, and they still desperately need deadbeats like rodwell to voluntarily go. And thats assuming Short hasn’t ringfenced the parachute payments for himself, which he probably has. They look fucked iyam. The best they can hope for is a quick promotion and these guys flick the club on to someone who can fund it properly. Which is probably their plan anyway.
