Just out of interest how long are you going to keep blaming Shepherd for Ashley running the club like Netto Ad infinitum it appears Sponge Or until he isn't buying top players when the club can afford them That doesn't really answer my question.

I never saw Best and I never saw Pele. One thing I can say is the game was no where near as competitive as it is now, no where near as quick, and I regard him as the greatest out and out goalscorer there's ever been. One player who often gets over looked when talking about the greatest players ever is Gerd Muller, he had a better scoring record than any of them at every level. Probably cos he's kraut like, but I've heard Beckenbauer say Muller made Bayern Munich the club they are today on his own. It may not have been as competitive, speed wise when Best played, but it was lot tougher. Best took treatment week in week out that was criminal compared to the way now, the things defenders could get away with then were unbelievable, but he was hard as nails. He played on shit heap pitches with a big heavy ball, but he could still do things that any player now would dream of. It was said by everybody who played with him and against him he wasnt just the best player in the league, he was the best player in every position in the league - I just wish there was more film of him about

Happy 60th birthday Kevin Keegan
spongebob toonpants replied to Dr Kenneth Noisewater's topic in Newcastle Forum
Well said Kenneth -I'm not ashamed to say I love him too, and, as always, will raise a glass in his name tonight -
I would put him behind George Best and Maradona, but I would say he is by far the most exciting player I have watched since the TV explosion of the game. When he played at Barcelona he was absolutely unbelievable.

Ahhh but Barnard didn't design forward facing exhausts. The problem with the F92 I seem to remember was pitch sensitivity. Wasn't this the car that Alesi had to literally drag round behind him? Literally?

Really interesting stuff there. Fascinating to see where this is going to lead - not just Egypt but the whole of the middle east. What it means for Israel is anybodies guess. I still don't know if what we are seeing here is a popular uprising or a military coup, I'm relieved and impressed by the lack of violence so far, I hope it stays that way obviously.

If you had kids you would realise you are desperate to get shot of the little parasites by the time they are 12 anyway

They are going primarily for the football, not the money or fame. If my boy was good enough I would send him in a heartbeat

With the (very notable) exception of Shay Given, I will give the Lardash credit for always getting top dollar when he flogs off our best players. Its just a pity the only thing it benefits is the balance sheet

By ambition I don't mean spunking tens of millions of their own money though, just running a club that had been turned into one of the top revenue generators in the world in a way that would take it forward. We don't know how bad the debt was when he took over, or what might have happened but to blame Shepherd for the state we are in now is ridiculous. When Ashley took over he paid off the debt in cash- as we were told time and time again. Of course it is impossible to know how much truth we have ever been told about the state of the finances by Ashley, he has lied from the minute he took over, the noises that come from the club have been nothing but misinformation and downright bollocks from the get go. Without wanting to defend Shepherd particularly he isn't the one who sanctioned the contracts for Viduka, Smith, Barton, Geremi, Capaca, Rozenhal, Beye, Jonas, Colo, Xisco, Gonzalez, and it wasn't him that sacked and therefore had to pay for the contracts of Allardyce and Keegan within acouple of months of each other. I'm pretty sure Shepherd didn't have Wise on the payroll at £1m a year either. To blame anybody but Ashley is ridiculous, and if he had any idea about how to run a club well we wouldn't be signing Shefki Kuqi whilst being £49 million up on transfers This is the one thing in this debate that boils my piss. He paid off the existing debts by creating new debts. The club owes more money now than it ever did under the last regime. Yet this line about him paying off the debts’ gets reeled out time and time again. That aside I agree with your view. Ashley should be judged on his own actions, not those of the previous regime. He chose to buy the club. He chose not to undertake due diligence. He chose to force Keegan out. He chose to appoint Wise, JFK and Lambias, piss Shearer around, sack Hughton, sell Carroll, rename the ground, deface the roof, put the club for sale, take it off the market, put it up sale again, take it off the market again..... he chose to take on the responsibility and he’s accountable for the state of the club now. I wasn't claiming he was white knight by paying off the debts, or as you more accurately point out loaning the club the money so the debt was transferred to him, I was trying to show the stupidity of blaming the shepherd debt legacy for the place we are now.

Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal - Saturday 5th February K/O - 3:00pm
spongebob toonpants replied to Flair's topic in Newcastle Forum
Good article that seemed to be starting out in the traditionally wrong-eyed insulting fashion, but finished off being refreshingly complimentary Fantastic stuff -
Ambition doesn’t equate to spunking tens of millions on new signings. Ambition in footballing terms is about wanting to fulfil your potential and loitering around the PL is way below NUFC’s potential. Take the ten year ST freeze bollocks. It’s a blatant admission the club are expecting to do jack shit over the next decade, that they have no interest in increasing their revenues though giving the punters a better product. Inflation alone will reduce our ability to bring in better players unless our revenue rises. But there's no tie-ins so how is it an admission? It's more of an admission that people hurting from the Carroll sale might not renew, and is designed more for the short-term than the long. A ten year price freeze is a short term plan - what now?

I laughed out loud at this. Honestly though Best's heading was abysmal in the Arsenal game, but he obviously has a decent shot on him if nothing else. Best- quick feet;slow brain

I'll keep this as simple as possible. You know nothing about football. ... and now I'll take it into more detail. There is absolutely nothing at all to indicate that Enrique is on the 'wain'. For something to be on the wane would indicate that it was on a slow gradual decline towards it's eventual end. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here because you can't even spell the word so it's unlikely that you even know what it means. I don't think you actually mean he's at the start of the end given that he just turned 25 last month. The discussion should end there. He's obviously not on the wane. Now, I was singing Enrique's praises in general. When he first played for us to me it was clear that we had a player who had the fundamental skills to be a great defender. He was strong and quick two areas where our defense was lacking. He stays on his feet and doesn't give up. Where he was lacking however was in his link up play with the rest of the team. Defensively he still had plenty to learn in terms of positioning and the like, but the fundamentals were as clear as day. In getting forward however he struggled, he seldom had a short passing option to play to, or at least felt he didn't and so resorted to the long ball far too often. When Jonas arrived in his second season he did start to form a good relationship with Enrique that gave Jose a direct short passing option. They were able to link up and this allowed Enrique to get further with much more frequency than his first season, though ultimately not a great deal came of his attack. Part of this was down to the players that he was crossing to and the general negative feeling at the club. Part of it was down to him missing a fair few games with injury. Part of it was that his crosses weren't that accurate. Certainly in direct contrast to Jonas, Enrique gets a lot of pace and movement on his crosses. If you can get these sort of balls into the right areas then you'll be a goal keepers nightmare. Unfortunately Enrique's crosses weren't consistent (they're more consistent now, but plenty of room to improve) and so not a lot came from them. Last season in the Championship the area where Enrique really developed most in my opinion was in his possession of the ball. Defensively he wasn't often tested in the Championship. In attack he should have been getting even more involved in my opinion, because he quite clearly was better than the players he was coming up against. Back in the top flight and he's now confident on the ball and will take players on on the dribble. When he does he routinely beats his man. If he stays on the dribble he'll often get closed down by second and third men coming in, or will be limited in his ability to get off a shot courtesy of being quite heavily left footed. Now you try to cite a few points to carry your paper thin argument - one being that Enrique doesn't do many slide tackles. That's been busted already by many others in this thread. On top of that you try to claim that he should have tried some sort of slide tackle on Damien Duff in the Fulham game. This is further evidence of your lack of knowledge. Whilst that was a horrible bit of defending from Enrique there was no way that he could have at any stage made a tackle of any sort on Duff once Duff had the ball. If he did he would have received a straight red card. I don't know why you've brought Danny Simpson into it at all, because frankly he has extremely little to do with the way Enrique plays. Simpson has been having some good games of late which is excellent to see. I think he's a good player with a consistent cross who reads the game pretty well. Even still 10 times out of 10 I'd rather have Enrique defending than Simpson. Has Enrique had a bad game and an ordinary half in his last two starts? Yes. Does it need a thread of its own to bring it to everyone's attention? No. Another nice try but Im afraid you've already shot your bolt with your nasty little comments earlier on. Its plain for all to see that while slagging me off when I said that I thought Enrique attacked well previously, the FACTS were YOU actually AGREED with me. Very hypocritical. Had you bothered to argue some decent points at first, rather than lie, I would have debated them with you. As it is, its too late baby. A simple sorry would have done. When you find yourself in a hole - stop digging

Lazio loony about Toon's Gutierrez
spongebob toonpants replied to Christmas Tree 's topic in Newcastle Forum
Fuckin Lazio LAZIO. Reports coming from Spain suggest Wolves are interested in taking maverick Atletico Madrid striker Kun Aguero, the validity is yet to be ascertained, but it's a trusted source it really is. Some fucking dilemma that for Ashley -
