Better sorting before if you ask me.

Trippier's passing early on was shocking and looked like he didn't really want the ball which is unusual for him.
-
It wasn't a bad performance but we couldn't put much together in the final third despite many opportunities. Not playing with a striker hurts and I agree it was odd taking off Barnes who wasn't playing poorly as he's our best scorer with Isak and Wilson out. Almiron looked very dangerous when he came on, set up Gordon with a great chance. Murphy's worst game for us in a while, I'd start Almiron next up. Tonali was good, but did tire and Howe was right to substitute him. I would have thought Osula would get on. Trippier turned the ball over needlessly a lot in the first half but improved in the second. Hall is becoming positionally much better defensively.

It's not exactly the same problem. The overall/average quality of our squad has improved (less deadwood), we've also improved our european coefficient which means that our share of the champion's league prize money will be greater. In the meantime we've also greatly increased our sponsorship and corporate revenue so with the guarantee of champion's league income we could bring in more players (and are more attractive to prospective players). Nothing that comes easy is worth anything. Winning a trophy will be a fantastic acheivement whatever trophy it is, but that's not the end of the challenge. We need to become one of the most desirable and prestigious clubs in the world to play for, manage etc. I'd say we're already in the top 30.

Howe's half-arsed civil war slackers v Pep's champions in waiting

I don't share the vitriol for Shearer and Given but the first bit is so blatantly true that it barely even needs saying anymore. It's also true outside the box where players so often do the same to win a free kick (Bruno for example does it routinely), get to the ball first and any subsequent contact from the opposing player is a foul. I don't have any issue with this rule/interpretation either. If you come for the ball and don't get it just about any impediment you subsequently offer to the player who did get the ball can be adjudged a foul. The rule is it's a free kick if you "impede a player with contact". There's contact and Gordon's access to the ball is impeded therefore it's a foul. Same with Joelinton.

Like 👍 the bolded bit. Shearer is wrong on this but at least he has an opinion that isn't governed by the strip the player is wearing unlike most other pundits. For that reason alone I can forgive him though there's 200 odd other reasons too.

Howe's half-arsed civil war slackers v Pep's champions in waiting

I think his touch was fine actually, wasn't too heavy but it was clear it was a race to get the touch knowing that if he got there first contact from Ederson (and a resulting penalty) was more or less inevitable. It happens all the time outside the box as well . As for evening out I guess that'a fair enough, though for me it's two penalties. You don't not give one penalty because you gave one earlier that was somewhat minimal contact. -

I stopped watching after the game, why were they saying it wasn't? Ederson got his foot after Gordon played the ball past him. Sure he played it up, but if you think that's a problem with Gordon you haven't been watching football for the last 30 years. -

I wonder whether they'll have anything to say about Joelinton being brought down later. -

LTA brought results without performances, her run was up. You have ushered in the rebirth of Eddie Howe's Newcastle. All hail King Gloom. -

Well done AG, great timing in the run, good touch and a composed penalty. Controversial but this is the best we have played all season. -

If it doesn't get a deflection off Tonali Pope may have been in with a chance of saving it. -

Grealish did get lucky with the rebound from the tackle. -
You never know, the bigger sides are more likely to rest players for this as the prize money is peanuts. That said they often have the depth to rest players and still have loads of quality. If nothing else now that it's at home this is a chance for us to try something a little different with not a lot to lose.

Wandered in here for a chuckle.

Again and as usual Jordan is talking absolute nonsense that doesn't stand up to the slightest bit of investigation. Were we supposed to buy players in January 2022 (our first transfer window under new ownership) when faced with relegation that we intended to sell for a profit 2 and a half years later (July 2024)? Obviously not, the only priority was Premier League survival. So having miraculously achieved that in the next window are we supposed to buy players who we can then onsell for a profit one and a half years later? Who did we buy? 22 year old Alex Isak (La Liga), 22 year old Sven Botman (Ligue 1), we made 26 year old Matt Targett's transfer permanent after he had a stellar end to the season. Bought Nick Pope (30). Alex Isak and Sven Botman could be sold for a profit (probably even on the back of Botman's ACL injury) but we don't want to sell them yet. Even Pope we could sell for a profit on the <£10 million we paid for him, but his value to us far exceeds that. Targett is the only one we couldn't and his price was recouped through not being relegated. Even in the next windows we bought young players who for the most part have increased in price (e.g. Gordon, Minteh, Tonali, Barnes). All good business overall (unlucky on Tonali's suspension and Barnes' injury). The only not fit for purpose windows we've had were under Ashley and this most recent one under the stewardship of Mitchell. Too early to judge him harshly on this alone though. Yes we do need to now shift our approach a little, but this is because we now already have a quality first team and squad and players who are attractive to other teams. We also have training facilities that are 2.5 years enhanced, a vastly superior coaching staff, a much much better commercial income and a much broader scouting network. Now we can start to take even more chances on bringing in young players of promise with a view to them either making the first team or turning a profit. It's not a unique strategy, everyone has been doing it for over a decade, some are just much better positioned to do it effectively. Now we are too due to the hard work across the board in the last 2.5 years. Celebrate the success of the last two years and plan for our continued evolution over the next several.
