the states are surreal.....and wildly diverse, and they are easy to make generalisations about (correct or percieved) since their way of life is so pervasive throughout the media. when i lived there i met lots of really nice people and lots of fucking idiots, hard to put 'em all in one basket. PL is right though california and NYC are unlike anywhere else in the states....wyoming (cheny's home state) is fucking scary.

The proper name of what most the world call "football" and the Americans call "soccer" is association football. The word "soccer" comes from an alteration of "assoc.", which is an abbreviation of "association football" (as opposed to Rugby or Gaelic football, etc). The use of the term can be traced back to about 1880: it's documented as soccer or socca in 1889, and socker in 1891. Soccer seemed have become the most common phrase by 1895. Originally it was only university slang; it was habitual for English university students in the 1880s to abreviate any word and then add on 'er' or 'ers' to it (so breakfast became brekkers, or rugby became ruggers). Because this linguistic habit belonged to an elite social group is probably why the name soccer never caught on among the masses in most of the world. Perhaps it would never have caught on in the United States, except that Americans already had their own preferred 'football' game. so you guys came up with name not north americans.

we were still playing the 442 last we played them as well...hopefully the 433 will allow us to break the deadlock. -
I know but it's the same as an Indian kabbadi player saying football is shite, not one person would care, or know who they are. Which is my point. had i placed this in the newcastle forum, i could see your point, but as this is the general chat forum.....kindly wind your fucking neck in.

It's ridiculous mate. I'm all for international followers, as long as they don't get Cup Final tickets, but questioned about inferiority complexes. America doesn't even register in my brain. There's nothing about USA I know about or have an interest in, literally nothing, other than Gooch when he played for us. They must think the world revolves around them. It doesn't it revolves around us. you're a cartoon stevie...and obviously on the windup.
-
wasn't talking about my country though, this article was about an american and responded to by an american, granted in a canadian paper/website. point is stevie it is a topic about football/soccer yet you in your myopic view of everything have tried to make it about me not being english, could you please explain from the title of this thread how you thought i agreed with what was being said as opposed to say, how i thought the bonehead in question was the dumbest person alive?

can't stand the fact that he has some quasi-star status in the media, no better than a contestant on Big Brother IYAM, unfortunately he has a contuinual outlet as he is the face of the UFC
-
agree with you, watched a bit when it first came on the scene but lost interest as it invariably devolves into a wrestling match, if only boxing weren't so corrupt.

I've just read it there, I don't see why it's relevant to post the thoughts of some yank nobody knows being derogatory about football. 99.9% of English people think American Football is wank, in fact 99.9% of non yanks do. We look down our nose at their shit sports, and laugh at someone no ones heard of trying to belittle it. By you posting this link, it's clear you think he's important. Who is he? No one knows. If it was Obama the president people would generally know who he is. your inferiority complex to americans is hilarious, actually I don't think he's important i don't watch UFC, as this is a football/soccer board i posted this. where does your deep seeded fear of americans come from stevie?
-
actually, as it is in the first sentence i mean literally. literally adverb exactly, really, closely, actually, simply, plainly, truly, precisely, strictly, faithfully,....etc etc.
-
president of the UFC. did you read the article? it is literally the first sentence.

http://slam.canoe.ca...3/19590301.html He kicked soccer right where it hurts, and now UFC president Dana White is going to put his boots where is mouth is. It was in the Calgary Sun's own boardroom last week when White unleashed on the most popular sport on earth, slagging soccer as a refuge for children and untalented hacks. "I can't stand soccer. It's the least-talented sport on Earth. There's a reason three-year-olds can play soccer," White told the Sun's editorial board, while dicussing an upcoming UFC event in Calgary. "When you‚re playing a game when the net is that big and the score is 3-1 — and that's a blowout — are you (kidding) me? You know how untalented you have to be to score three times when the net is that big?" No surprise, the Sun's footage of the statement has enraged soccer fans and players worldwide, leading retired American soccer star Jimmy Conrad to respond with a challenge to play. "Why would a tough guy like you feel so threatened by soccer that you needed to go off on it unprovoked?" said Conrad in video response to White. "Here's what I'm going to do. Because I like you, I'm going to give you the opportunity to join me and a few friends for a game of soccer. Since you believe playing soccer requires no talent, I'm sure you'll be the star. Unless you're scared." White, of course, accepted the challenge — and now the whole Internet is abuzz with news of the upcoming grudge match, started right here at the Sun. http://www.youtube.c...player_embedded

look at stoke this year, granted we play better football than they do, but they spent some coin last summer to bolster their squad and this year they have looked a tad shakey. i have absolutely no faith that we will go out and sign the calibre of player(s) needed to be in europe (if we get there) and have a successful domestic campaign.

yep, bit of a johnny come lately with that series, figured i'd see what i've been missing, forgot how much i enjoy comics.
