The whole issue was nothing of the kind. We need to get out, the country is ungovernable. Was the issue not to get the Taliban out and reinstate something which more resembled the old (pre-soviet invasion) Afghan leadership....only with democracy? Agreed we should get out, it's obvious we (the west) are NOT on the same page as the afghanies

Rape law hurting efforts to sell NATO role in Afghanistan: NATO chief Last Updated: Saturday, April 4, 2009 | 12:17 AM ET Comments18Recommend8CBC News A controversial law in Afghanistan that includes a provision making it illegal for a Shia Muslim woman to refuse to have sex with her husband is making it more difficult to boost NATO troop levels in Afghanistan, the secretary general of the alliance says. "How can I defend — or how can the British government defend, the Canadian government, the Dutch government — that our boys and girls are dying there in the defence of universal values," Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said at the NATO summit at Strasbourg, France. "And you see a law almost coming into effect… that fundamentally violates women's rights and general human rights, then I have a problem." U.S. President Barack Obama wants to beef up the alliance's role in the conflict. But NATO allies have been reluctant to commit significant new ground troops to the war effort. Afghan Ambassador Omar Samad has said the Afghan government is studying the law, which has sparked international outrage, to determine its status, and has pleaded for patience and understanding. Canada and other nations have expressed strong concerns about the legislation, which would also make it illegal for a woman to leave the house without her husband's permission, or have custody of children. "This is extremely alarming and it's troublesome for a lot of the allies," Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said. But Cannon questioned whether any such Afghan law "was adopted in the legitimate way and manner" of Afghanistan's national assembly. Cannon said two of Karzai's ministers pleaded ignorance this week, and the ambassador to Canada has been called in for an explanation Ok, so the question I have is......do we have a right to be questioning the democratic legislation of laws that reflect different cultural values than our own? The whole issue was to institute a democratic state back into Afghanistan, we assumed (hahaha) that the result would be a mirrored image of western democracies, but what we failed to recognize is that the people voting and running for office have a different set of core values than our own. What do you think?

i think the impetus behind the subtitles was that they (the writers) were afraid of losing some viewers because of the writers strike. made it much easier to follow, not sure if they are still doing as I haven't been able to see the hour before for the last couple of weeks.

Depends on the circumstances!! Get your message across to both of them. tell her to pop the kettle on and when she leaves the room be as frosty as fuck with the cheeky twat til he feels so uncomfortable he has to leave. hAHAHAHA........ ........that'll get her attention for sure.

question for those in the UK/europe....... are the networks televising two episodes every night? they have been playing the last weeks episodes with the "Lost for Dummies" subtitles explaining the relevance of the scene. Then when that one is over they play the current episode.

BANG ON! When they (Oceanic 6) were trying to get back to the island they had to re-create the flight as closely as possible, therefore you have Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley, Ben (as stand in for Locke), Locke (as stand in for Jacks Dad), Sayid as prisoner a la Kate in season one. And the pilot (whats-his-name), who I presume had to be on the plane because he also left the Island. Still not sure about Ben getting shot, and as far as that goes, what about Claire's kid Arron, and (while unborn at the time of departure Sun's kid), wouldn't they have needed to go back to save the castaways?

start a climbing wall design company....... custom designs only to start, get more capital then get into sales and design of a modular wall (not panels) but actual structure (like tinker toys) that would keep climbing gyms "fresh" and unboring.

manc mag butting in on my comments, and calling me obsessed !!!! Class. You are a bit when it comes to Renton like. Wouldn't say you're the only one on here who is obsessive at times by any means. what I find the most amusing is the same wriggling from Renton, and accusing someone else of starting these "insults", in addition to "avoiding me" - for the reasons I've stated. I don't think I've jumped into a thread and then said to the person I've addressed that he's obsessed with me WTF, I'm in a good mood. Can't help but laugh at the sheer stupidity of it. Good on FOP for showing them both up to be dicks, and obsessed with himself, is how I see it. FYP......whats with the third person reference to himself?

So you're contradicting your earlier views about the BNP then. Thanks for clarifying. Who then should make the decision who should be allowed to speak and who shouldn't? The law courts? The government? The Intelligence agencies? The media? What you're suggesting is contrary to any notion of living in a free country, you'd be better suited living in China tbh. Case closed. Not really, this is covered in UK law. What an ambiguous reply. Ambiguous replies are generally the product of a defeated entity, Fop being a case in point. Its because I haven't got time at work that I haven't given a full response. There are laws in the UK that are designed to stop people preaching hate. These should be used. Its not hard or ambiguous Stevie...well maybe for you. indeed there are Danny, however you misunderstand those as was shown in the post in the Luton anti-war demo..... here it is QUOTE(Danny B @ Mar 17 2009, 09:06 AM) QUOTE(Renton @ Mar 17 2009, 03:57 PM) I'm fairly sure freedom of speech was quite high on their agenda Leazes. It's a tradition and right I strongly associate with this country, don't you? I'm fairly sure quite a few would turn in their graves at some of the stuff that has been said in this thread too, especially considering the regime they were fighting. Surprised you can't see this. Well, actually, I'm not. Freedom of speach as long as it is legal Renton, that is what you appear to be glossing over. What they are doing is illegal, if I racially abused them I would be locked up, they are inciting hatred and should be punished. Its not hard. could you make out something other than "free palestine" and "allah akbar" in the video? from Wiki, but also found in the act itself(section 29J) "The Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 amended the Public Order Act 1986 by adding Part 3A. That Part says, "A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred." The Part protects freedom of expression by stating in Section 29J: Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system." so you see the law that stops preaching hate also has a caveat within protecting the public's right to make their own minds up, and voice those opinions without prejudice.

ok first off it's not for what he says or might say that has got him in hot water over here, it's the fact he went in to Gaza and "aided" Hamas, a recognized ( incorrectly imo they were democratically elected) terrorist gov't. So the short answer is....Yes they would let the BNP do a talk, this is not so much about freedom of speech as it is about just how fucking clueless my gov't is.

hahaha...probably, funny thing is that was the conservative party attempt at "humanizing" Harper, the sweater and kitten have been the "butt" of jokes since then Any Canadians every invented anything or exported any kind of worthy culture? insulin ....wait here you go, cheeky fuckers ok so Parky will point out that not all those things listed were invented by people 'born' in Canada, but lots were and they were invented here......probably the superior air quality

i would say we're neither like the yanks or the brits. altogether anyway, the yanks think we're socialists ( a dirty word down there ), and you lot think, well apparently, nothing, about us. The effect of american media on canadian values is HUGE, so we share many of the same consumer driven values. thing is we're massive (geographically speaking) so people from the east( sound the most like brits) are different from those in the west, then throw in the quebecers for good measure. TBH we're not really like any one thing, hence the schizo nationalistic sense.
-
HAHAHA......exactly my point though. No wonder people think we're boring. Trudeau was the most well known Prime Minister (Stevie were in the Commonwealth), as for royal antics he did slide down the bannisters at Buckingham Palace and did a piruette behind 'Liz when she visited. This international amnesia of all things Canadian is what fuels our passive/aggressive nationalistic side. check out this vid

Please don't paint Canada with the same brush as our PM. As I said before the guy is a robot I mean who the fuck poses with a kitten? Worse, who the fuck votes for the prick? Harper has all the foreign policy savvy of a wet fart. The man/robot is clueless, last fall the after the election, the other parties got together to take down the government b/c it's a minority. Then the Conservatives start in with "the Canadian public has made their choice", yeah they did Stevo, and they gave you a minority. So undetered with the damage to the democratic process Stevo decides to ask the Govenor General to end parliament (Pro-rog(u)e)(SP?) before the other parties can get a vote to become a coalition. The poor GG (not george), has no choice but to accept the request. So for the the first time in the history of Canadian Parliament the gov't has used this leverage (which is normally used to end parliament prematurely in the face of being ahead of schedule and out of things to vote on) to stop the democratic process. Freedom my ass!!!! So it doesn't surprise me that "we've" made ourselves look the fools again.

keep up the good work........ya wanker

ok, admittedly i am a GG neophyte, so please excuse this next question. Why do so many on here have an issue with what this guy is saying? So far I have heard him say that he is against war and the killing of civilians..etc. , I can get behind those statements tbh. So, keeping in mind I have heard very little of the rest of what GG has to say, whats the big deal?
-
Exactly. He's not one for the sheep, but most of his comments hit the nail on the head. He has turned into a bit of a nob lately, but suppose fame and being so god damn right all the time is bound to make you big headed. Thirded. Plus, anyway, I'm literally amazed at some of the comments on this thread from people I'd expect something different from. FFS freedom of speech is nothing to do with this so-called 'hand-wringing'. It's common sense! Jesus wept, do we want to live in a world where only 'normal' comments are allowed or are we actually allowed to make our own minds up? Also George Galloway has been elected a member of Parliament and Canada are part of the so-called 'Common wealth'. It's an utter joke the guy isn't being allowed to speak in a supposedly 'free' country called Canada, especially when the USA has no problems with him. He's banned for National Security needs apparently . Maybe someone can tell me how old George is going to threaten the Western civilised world with his wicked pen and tongue? have you seen our PM FFS, the guy is scary I personally think he's a robot. I think the issue is his (GG) ties to Hamas, giving money or something, anyway because our gov't has Hamas on a "list" of terrorist organizations his affiliation is what the stink is about......not what he has to say. As fer Parky, hahaha Canada boring!!!??? Whatever, if you've been here, fair enough to each their own. If not, STFU!!!! Canada is anything but boring, T.O. Montreal and Vancouver are all world-class cities with world class night life. Calgary, well I apologise for Calgary it is boring as fuck. Only joshing mate. Don't take anything I say on these boards too seriously. duly noted we canucks have a bit of a passive/aggressive nationalistic side, we're overly polite and can't really identify with what it is that makes us canadian but get bent out of shape if someone slags the great white north (no Danny that is not a racist nickname), back to the post...... just to show how ridiculous and clueless our gov't is, the U.S. have let Galloway in yet Harper and his cronies still won't because of "security concerns"......bunch of idiots, what kind of security concerns could there be if the U.S. is ok with it. It's like highschool student council up here, if you've ever had the displeasure to see the current canadian parliamentary question period they stand/sit around and yell insults at each othere while the other side is trying to make their point......utterly disgraceful. The U.S. are shit scared of him since he gave that senator a kicking live on telly. footage?

agreed, the kid is sure to be an alchoholic later on in life, far to young to be drinking imo
