No they did not speak French. The Bretons, the Basque and all the other regions spoke their own language. The Normans assimilated 'Frankish' as a language and culture which later became modern French but they were not 'french'.

That link was just about the common misconception about the nationality of William. Robert Bartlett's series on The Normans on the BBC gave a good insight into the Norwegian mafia but wiki has a good overview. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harald_Hardrada

Indeed. I have just made a side career out of correcting (or at least introducing the nuance to) the 'French' invasion of England.

That's horrendous. Funnily enough, that is very similar to something I just read on reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/xo41d/doctorsnursesredditors_what_has_been_your_most/c5o66p2

William wasn't French was my point Ausman. Just saying because there was a French king called Henry in 1066. He didn't invade England in 1066. The reason the invasion in the south won because there was a cunning distraction in the North. There is clear evidence of collusion. The 'Norse Men' has been after the island for centuries.

Wilhelm the Conquerer wasn't French, if he was he would have been called Guillaume. Wilhelm was Norse and used his tribal relations with the Vikings to conquer the country. There was a french king in Paris at that time, known as the king of the Francs and he had nothing to do with the invasion.

If Cabaye hadnt just signed for Pardew, or if another poster hadnt verbatim posted the same argument or if you hadnt randomly called me contrary yesterday for disagreeing with Russell Brand () then aye probably boring. Otherwise topical.
-
Not going to call him contrary Alex? Surely someone putting forward the exact same argument as me is being contrary too?

I pay > 60% on my income, tax base in the UK is low.

Been enjoying that Jim O'Rourke too. Just discovered this and loving it.

We have near 0% inflation currently. £9 won't be worth £5 in 5 years.

Which is definitely hypocritical. You still need to make a moral jump to saying its hypocritical to hold a minutes silence for the massacre in Tunisia. I do agree with him about how the press reported the tragedy as caused by a Muslim without reporting the heroics of the people there.
-
I'm not. I listened and thought i think i can see the logic but i'm not sure it hangs together. He was speaking freely for 5 minutes but what it boiled down to was that the governments caused terrorism and so therefore cant mourn it. Is morality that simple? As my understanding of moral theory would interpret that as meaning that the actions of the current UK government have in the past equated to shooting 30 innocent tourists. There may be some who think that is true with the drone programme and wars in the middle east killing thousands of innocent people. Thats not really what Russell says though.

Lowering corporatation tax is good? Read this http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/jul/07/corporate-welfare-a-93bn-handshake
-
Which actions of which governments? The UK government sells arms to the middle-east so is therefore not allowed to mourn 30 tourists being shot on holiday for no reason. Its a bit loose like.
-
His justifications were a bit vague in that video for being against the one minute silence. Because 'someone' was 'selling arms(?)' to 'someone' before 9/11 this means that economics has driven a 'policy' (which one and by whom) which has led to the Tunisian massacre. Therefore, the UK government is not allowed to call for a one minute silence to mark the atrociousness of the massacre. Not sure i get the morality of that, helps that he starts off his speech with 'i'll tell you what it is mate' as that sets the tone nicely. He's a geezer after all.

That's good, sounds a bit muffly though. Coincidentally, the same youtube user who upped that Daze track also upped the summery Jack J i was going to post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LhatZyQxx8

He's getting a bit David Icke for my liking.
