There's no doubt there a "great" club in terms of winning things but they gained only a modest although crucial advantage through consistency, continuity and wise spending at a time when English football was a comparative level playing field. Then that spell was broken largely due to tragedies towards the end of their dominance. Then they were a decent cup side, wasting millions chasing a league title that Ferguson then Wenger and Chelsea shut them out from. A lot of them date their financial upturn from the time they were "hours from bankruptcy" under Hicks and Gillette (I knew they had to sell but I don't remember that much of a carry on about their perilous situation, more myth making I think) but it's UEFA and their coefficient merit payments who truly keep these clubs where they are nowadays, all that UEFA history is where the true paydirt is nowadays, money for fuck all which is ironic when you think about who wanted to break away and do the ESL... their payments increased as a bribe after they had a rethink .
