get a decent firewire interface like a motu 828 (don't go usb its not got guaranteed bandwidth into the cpu and memory and uses more system resources). (about £350) get a cheapy sequencer ( i use cockos reaper for recording audio (its free and you can multitrack easily)) or you could use audacity (which is free for purely audio related recording). i've used cubase and sonar and pro tools and logic and reaper is the best value for money by a mile. i'd use cubase again though as its quite easy for me to use... Get some sm-57's for toms/ hats/ cymbals. get a kick drum mic. get a decent large diapraghm condenser for general purpose recording ( i realise this will go over your budget but you have to live a little!).... the 828 works well with guitars/ synths/mics and has very good sound quality, it can also function as a mixer .

i can't back up what i said, but i do think "dame" kelly was consistently one of the fastest 800m / 1500m runners (of her time) and her injuries coincided with a number of tournaments, some athletes/ sportspeople don't peak till late on in their careers, or in some cases don't get the luck they need to win until late on... there is a difference between that and blitzing a 100m or 200m field because your eyes are on stalks because of steroids.

i reckon by the next transfer window we'll have a better idea of where we are going noelie, if you look at sams past signings he's often gambled on the short term to improve the team, in our case because the club was still being bought out by mike ashley and all the changes that incurs, he may have had his hands tied in terms of the personell he gets in. i think its going to be a tricky few months ahead as teams have figured us out already. we aren't playing good football and ball retention is not a thing we do which leaves us prone to counter attacks. another thing, elano and petrov cost not a lot and both were (and have been all season) outstanding... why werent we looking at them!
