I think its only really an issue if you use unsecure wireless connections such as Starbucks and the like. If you're using it on a PC at home then I dont think its a problem. Setting SSL may slow down the running of gmail slightly due to encrypting and de-encrypting the data but if you've got anything newer than a 10 year old PC and some form of broadband then you've got nothing to lose by setting the SSL settings. You can set use SSL on an ad-hoc basis by loading https://www.gmail.com rather than the http: URL. Allegedly the SSL settings can cause problems on mobile devices though so be warned if you use your phone etc to view gmail.
