A Trophy at Last

Silverware!

We got our hands round a European trophy on Thursday evening, thanks to this man:

lucarelli-livorno.jpg

Cristiano Lucarelli (pictured) scored the only goal as Livorno beat Auxerre in the final UEFA Cup Group A tie.

That defeat was enough to send the French side out of the competition,

And with (deep breath) Odense, Twente Enschede, Grasshoppers Zurich, SV Ried, Marseille, NK Maribor, Kayserispor, Ethnikos Achnas and Hertha Berlin also failing to make it through to the last 32, that leaves only one club remaining to have qualified from the Intertoto Cup:

Newcastle United

From the Intertoto Cup

official website (before Thursday's games) here

There is not yet an official UEFA Intertoto Cup Winner 2006. The best performing team(s) of those 11 will be named UIC Winner 2006 and will receive the usual UEFA Intertoto Cup trophy.

An open top bus parade date is still tbc....

Bout time.

Anyone else expect Leazes to use this in an argument about how the current board are achieving sucess?

I would expect Leazes to use them pine doors that Bobby loved as an example of this board achieving success <_<

Newcastle to lift Intertoto Cup

Newcastle will collect their first trophy in 37 years when they are awarded the 2006 Intertoto Cup.

Glenn Roeder's side are the winners as they are the last surviving Intertoto entrants in the Uefa Cup.

"We will be very happy to receive it," said Roeder. "It would be disrespectful to consider it a lesser tournament, as some managers do."

Uefa has revealed there is likely to be a presentation before Newcastle's next Uefa Cup home tie on 22 February.

The trophy is Newcastle's first since the Fairs Cup in 1969.

The Magpies won a two-legged tie against Lillestrom in July to go through to the qualifying stages of the Uefa Cup.

Roeder added: "This is a little bit of a reward for the boys who had to come back on 26 June to play in the competition."

The Magpies face Belgian side Zulte-Waregem in the last 32 of the Uefa Cup in February.

Always knew the current board would bring us success on the European stage.

Cup success in "Europe" without any fancy dan "planning"! ;)

I can't really believe they still give a cup out, I kinda thought that calling it the intertoto cup was just a figure of speech these days.

Aren't we a big enough laughing stock already without adding fuel to the fire?

We've not won a thing for nearly 40 years and the first cup we do win is awarded to us because of results we had absolutely no control over.

Sure our directors haven't just pulled their christmas crackers a bit early and ooops, out pops a plastic cup? :icon_lol:

Does that mean Fat Fred will fuck off? He did say he'll leave when we win something...

You missed the "naked" part also.

I think we'd all be grateful is FFS forgets that too.
