Why Endorse The Tories?

For sure, Gordon Brown — like the Rubinites here in America — made the great mistake of buying into the promises of high finance. But is there any doubt that a Tory government would have done the same?

And I understand the sense that Labour has been in office too long. If I were British, I might well consider voting Lib Dem.

But in the current crisis, Brown’s policies have been sensible, whereas the Tories wanted to slash spending in the face of recession, which would have been disastrous. And The Economist agrees — then endorses the Tories.

Is The Economist of the belief that there will be no future crises? That this gigantic failure of judgment in the face of a defining moment for economic policy offers no hint about how well the Tories will perform in dealing with other issues?

It’s utterly bizarre.

Just had a look and Labour got over 60% of the vote where I live in the last General Election. Loads of point in voting then.

We all know it, just not sure this article was posted at the time...

The three main parties have unveiled their policies for north-east England ahead of the general election.

All recognise the importance of building on the region's emerging renewable technology industries.

Labour said it would continue to reduce long-term unemployment and support regeneration agency One North East.

The Liberal Democrats said their tax reforms would be enormously beneficial in the North East and the Conservatives have pledged to reduce the wealth gap.

Labour has outlined plans to make the region a world leader for low carbon and green technology.

A spokesman said: "We can also build on our strengths in financial services, tourism and science and innovation, with our plan for investment and growth.

"By contrast, the Tories want to scrap regional development agency One North East, remove the investment allowances that help new businesses grow and cut the Train to Gain scheme which helps workers improve their skills. That's the choice facing us at this election."

The Lib Dems are promising to cut taxes on the first £10,000 of income.

Their spokesperson said: "Average wages in the North East are lower than anywhere else in the UK.

"Our plans will mean around one in five people paying no income tax at all, while nearly everyone else pays no income tax on the first £10,000 they earn, saving £700 a year."

In addition, the party said it would improve road and rail links between the North East and Scotland.

The Conservatives said one of the biggest challenges facing the region was unemployment, particularly amongst the young, and has promised to invest in skills.

"We believe that the North East is uniquely placed to take advantage of the growth in new and renewable energy because of its traditional skills in engineering and off-shore energy construction," said the party.

"We will establish Britain's first Green Investment Bank to channel and promote investment into this new sector."

The Tories also claimed the region's geographical location can be a "disadvantage to business", and said its planned national super fast broadband network would be a "huge advantage".

All three parties have plans for the future of regional development agency One North East.

Labour, which established RDAs, said the investment and support of One North East was vital to the region's economic recovery.

The Tories are proposing to reform the system into partnerships of councils and local businesses, while the Lib Dems want to see the introduction of more public accountability.

Mind, you lucky people have got UKIP, BNP and National Front candidates to choose from. Every additional vote for another party could cost them their deposit. :(
