John Carver has been appointed as Assistant Manager to Alan Pardew at Newcastle United.

Carver, 46, has joined United on a contract until the end of the season.

Manager Alan Pardew said: "I'm delighted to be bringing John on board, he has an excellent track record as a coach and of course knows this club very well.

"It was crucial for me that I brought in an assistant who I knew would work well with the current coaching team we have here. We've got a good solid set-up with some excellent staff and maintaining that stability is very important to me. John fitted the bill perfectly.

"It's a short term deal at the moment in order that I can get to know John better and it gives us both the chance to see how the next four months pan out working together.

"That said, I'm very confident he'll be a great addition to our coaching staff and hopefully, if things go well, we can make it a longer term appointment come the summer."

And John added: "I am proud and honoured to be able to come back once again to my home town club.

"I have been lucky to be able to work around the world with some excellent people. However, I have always been a fan of this magnificent club and the years I spent working here were some of the happiest of my life.

"I am looking forward to working with Alan Pardew and building on the recent strides that the club has taken to get back to where we belong, at the top of English football.

"I understand how much the club and the results mean to these wonderful fans and I am delighted to be have the opportunity to assist Alan in delivering them the success they deserve.

"I would like to thank Mike, Derek and Alan for giving me this incredible opportunity."

Carver was previously at United under Sir Bobby Robson up until September 2004 and even took charge of the team in a caretaker capacity against Blackburn Rovers at St. James' Park on 11 September 2004, winning 3 - 0.

John has also spent time in various capacities at Leeds United, Luton Town, Toronto (MLS), Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield United. He also held the post of Academy Manager at Newcastle United in 2004/05.

As a player John joined United at the age of 14 in 1979, turning professional in 1983 but suffered a serious thigh injury playing for the Reserves at Wolves.

He moved to Cardiff in 1985 without having made a first team appearance for United but did play 13 times for the Bluebirds before that injury brought a premature end to his playing career.

ALAN PARDEW has followed in the footsteps of Sir Bobby Robson by drafting in highly-rated Geordie coach John Carver as his new number 2.

The Chronicle can reveal today that Carver - who had an emotional reunion with players and staff this morning at the club’s Benton base - made a dream return to the club he loves and will assist Pardew until the end of the season as the final piece in Pardew’s backroom jigsaw.

The move underlines Pardew’s respect for tradition at St James’ Park and the huge portrait of Sir Bobby which Chris Hughton had in the manager’s office has stayed in place at the request of the Toon boss appointed in December.

The 46-year-old has been out of work since leaving Sheffield United at the end of last year when Gary Speed quit his post for the Welsh national team and despite talk that Carver would follow him into international football, Pardew appears to have pulled off a shrewd piece of business in securing a figure that several of the Toon squad already know well and respect.

For Carver has worked with stars like Steven Taylor, Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi during the Robson era and also helped nurture Andy Carroll, halting a move to let the now £35million rated striker go back in 2004 during his stint as Academy director.

Pardew said today: "I'm delighted to be bringing John on board, he has an excellent track record as a coach and of course knows this club very well.

"It was crucial for me that I brought in an assistant who I knew would work well with the current coaching team we have here.

"We've got a good solid set-up with some excellent staff and maintaining that stability is very important to me.

"John fitted the bill perfectly."

Pardew explained why he had only made it a short-term deal for the former Plymouth, Luton, Leeds and Sheff United coach.

He said: "It's a short term deal at the moment in order that I can get to know John better and it gives us both the chance to see how the next four months pan out working together.

"That said, I'm very confident he'll be a great addition to our coaching staff and hopefully, if things go well, we can make it a longer term appointment come the summer."

Carver joined United during the Kevin Keegan era as a youth coach but was promoted to the first team camp under Ruud Gullit in 1998.

The Geordie helped guide Newcastle to Wembley in the FA Cup final under the Dutchman before a defeat to Manchester United.

Under Robson he helped transform the Magpies from relegation fodder to Champions League material in just two years.

But when Robson was sensationally shown the door in 2004 by Freddy Shepherd, Carver moved to the Academy as part of a reshuffle under Graeme Souness.

He then had stints in the Football League with Luton and Leeds before taking the post of manager at Toronto FC in the MLS for two years.

However, the torch never went out for Carver and he was understandably thrilled to be back on Tyneside today.

He said: "I am proud and honoured to be able to come back once again to my home town club.

"I have been lucky to be able to work around the world with some excellent people.

"But I have always been a fan of this magnificent club and the years I spent working here were some of the happiest of my life."

Carver feels that he can gel with Pardew and will work alongside Steve Stone at first team level.

He says: "I am looking forward to working with Alan Pardew and building on the recent strides that the club has taken to get back to where we belong, at the top of English football. I understand how much the club and the results mean to these wonderful fans and I am delighted to be have the opportunity to assist Alan in delivering them the success they deserve.

Sir Bobby said he was the best assistant he had iirc. Including Mourinho.

I know we're slated in the press for it but the fact he's a Geordie makes it all the better for me. At least with him and Pedro at the club in a senior capacity we can feel like we have a belonging in the club.

I can remember him being slagged off quite a bit on this board at one time.

Anyway, good appointment for me.

Can you? I can't like. I can remember Wadsworth getting some stick over his 'talent'-spotting skills though. Anyway, I think this is good news but I'm not that excited by it as it's not really going to change that much at the club.
