I'd prefer Ferguson to start at left back over Taylor or Perch either hijacking Simpson on the right or filling in on the left themselves. I'd say though that Pardew will want Taylor out there to assist with defending their set pieces and long throws. Carroll would have been good value in a game like this, Shola by contrast is useless in defending set pieces - loses his man most of the time.

Newcastle United Manager Alan Pardew has made three changes to the side that faced Everton two weeks ago.

Sol Campbell is drafted into the defence to replace Steven Taylor, who moves to the bench. In midfield, Joey Barton has recovered from his thigh injury so he starts instead of Jonas Gutierrez. And upfront, Leon Best picked up an injury in Thursday's training session so the in-form striker hasn't made the squad- Shola Ameobi starts in his place alongside Peter Lovenkrands.

Jose Enrique has passed a fitness test on his hamstring injury and starts in a 3-5-2 formation as the Magpies look to stifle Stoke's combative style of play.

Newcastle United team in full: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Sol Campbell, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique. Joey Barton, Cheik Tiote, Kevin Nolan. Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands. Subs- Tim Krul, Steven Taylor, Danny Guthrie, Shane Ferguson, Jonas Gutierrez, Shefki Kuqi, Nile Ranger.

Three centre halfs FFS. It could work ok in Colo is in front of the back four.
