Jamie Bulgers killer John Venables

JAMES BULGER’S killer Jon Venables could be given a second new name after pictures and details of his current identity were apparently leaked on the internet.

The pictures were reportedly taken before Venables’s re-arrest and subsequent jailing on child porn charges last March.

The Ministry of Justice today refused to rule out the possibility of another identity for Venables, now 28.

A spokesman said: “Such a change of identity is extremely rare and granted only when the police assess that there is clear and credible evidence of a sustained threat to the offender’s life on release into the community.”

The website purporting to show pictures of Venables as an adult appeared to have been shut down today, although it was unclear whether the authorities had acted against it.

The Ministry of Justice said they could neither “confirm nor deny” whether the pictures actually showed Venables, but reiterated the worldwide ban on the disclosure of any details that could lead to his new life being compromised

In 2001 a judge granted Venables anonymity for life in an effort to help him re-integrate back into society after spending much of his childhood locked up for the appalling crimes of 1993.

The CCTV footage of 10-year-olds Venables and his accomplice Robert Thompson taking two-year-old James by the hand in Bootle’s Strand shopping centre seared themselves into the national consciousness. The toddler’s mutilated body was found by a railway line in Walton two days later.

News of Venables’s new identity seemingly being exposed comes weeks before he becomes eligible for parole on his child pornography sentence.

The new online revelations also included details of where Venables had worked and details about places he had lived since his 2001 release, in an apparent flagrant breach of the anonymity Venables was granted.

James’s dad Ralph, 44, welcomed the appearance of the pictures

He said: “I’ve always said the public should know what Venables and Thompson look like. The ban on identity is ungovernable and ridiculous as millions have seen the photos and have access to the net.”

Horrible bastards should be revealed. They could be anyone, they could post on here.

Same could be said for Mary Bell though, couldn't it? And that situation was a lot closer to home!

Same old scouse media sympathy here in reality though. Venables is to Mary Bell what Hillsborough is to Bradford.

Couldn't agree more - the things they did to that poor laddy are beyond redemption and clearly they have not learnt their lesson if they still think breaking the law in a sickening manner is acceptable.

The only issue being that if the identities are made public - it will become a situation where the only solution as far as the fuzz are concerned is to lock em back up again indefinitely (which i would welcome tbh)

Reminds me of when it turned out Maxine Carr was working in our local branch of morrissons a couple of years back doing night shifts, amount of people that were calling to get at her was insane - not actually sure what they did with her in the end

Shite bait Rob, didnt you have the same sort of crack when the relative of a Lad killed by a nonce was asking for people to sign an online petition to keep the killer inside?

Shows what type of crack you've got though, fishing with a subject like this...

Are you fucking serious? kills a child in a horrendous fashion, and then years later gets locked up again on child porn charges and you reckon aye he's learnt his lesson and served his time.

yes I am serious - the law is there to dish out sentences - not a bunch of Daily Mail readers who would lynch everyone - or perhaps you'd rather we branded him?

This, mate, is the 21st Century - not the Middle Ages

I know you are serious Rob. Amnesty International itself. You have no regard for the feelings of any of the victims here or others who are victims, personally I find the idea of people like this scumbag ever walking the streets again repulsive.

The law isn't also there to satisfy Guardian readers and softie namby pambys who take the side of the criminals either. Killed a bairn, ruined a couples life forever, and he and his mate should be free, just so they can do it again or others can see life doesn't mean life ? Beggars belief.

I almost feel sorry for Rob sometimes. Totally desperate to wind people up but his patter's that dire he needs to resort to this sort of thing in order to do it.

Needs hung imo, he's proven that he hasn't learned his lesson.

When someone does that to a bairn and they're just a kid themself, for me it shows they've got something wrong in their genetic make up...get rid before he breeds.

You're right and we should have the death penalty for crimes as such or proper life imprisonment, especially when he's re-offended he should never ever be allowed out simple as that.

And he blew his own identity before by being in Liverpool, so we've to shell out to fix his mistake. Lock him up for good problem solved.

but sure we'll hang about until he rapes or murders someone else to appease you're principles eh?

We should've got him a new identity in another bloody country it's stupid as fuck trying to hide high profile people like that on these wee islands.

It's not Robs principles. It's the law. It's what keeps us from acting on our basic animal instinct to kill fuckers like this.

aye, I wonder if he's on the wind up, if he is, it's the wrong sort of subject to do it too.

we realise that. Lots of laws need changing though [although the law reflects the principles of namby pamby protesters and "progress"/whatever.

No place in a civilised society for shitbags like this, our duty is to protect the general public.

There is no question that he should be in prison until he dies after the kiddie porn. I'm against the death penalty for the reason that it is a bit late to say sorry if the wrong person is executed, but the likes of Venables does make run close to changing my mind.

Unfortunately its very difficult to enact laws things like this might be an argument for.

Emotively we see a child killer (in both senses here) as worse than an adult killer. But you can't value one life above another in law.

I'd keep them locked away and throw away the key if it was up to me, but in reality all civilised societies have to try and rehabilitate the offender.

I don't think any of us really know what kind of a person Mary Bell is as an adult, but as a child murderer of two young children she was just as evil as Venables and Thompson. Her handling of the police questioning was horrifying. All three belong in institutions imo.

I'm not sure if Rob really means what he says or is just deliberately being controversial, but if he does mean it, this is a step too far.
