Genuine question to all on here, who has ever called these just 'City' throughout their life? They've always been Man City to me and most people around my age and older, it doesn't piss me off like the United shit in the media but can't get my head around anyone from up here especially giving the media's preferred name for the manc clubs. Give your heed a wobble if you do.

Well I don't think there are any other "Citys" in the premier league so no ambiqguity for me?

It's a fair point but I can't actually think of any other teams in the PL that have the City suffix. I bet there is one but fuck if I can think who.

I don't understand this thinking tbh, what has being a PL team have to do with anything? Played loads of games v Blackburn, Sheff Wed etc I wouldn't call them Rovers or Wednesday if they were the only Rovers or Wednesday in the PL then go back to calling them Sheff Wed and Blackburn if they got relegated.

I would definitely refer to Wednesday as such if both Sheffield clubs were in the premier league. But there are far too many "Uniteds" for this to work. Plus, along with Leeds maybe, I think we are one of the only genuine unified clubs in England, and one of the oldest. Man United are newbies and clearly don't represent a United city in that respect.

The names are up to the clubs, it's up to them what they call themselves, unified or not, I've always just referred to Sheffield Wednesday as 'Sheff Wed' personally.

Aye but realistically they're just going to get called the city's name cos it's easier. I know this makes me a hypocrite with respect of the United tag though. Ultimately you're right, but I'm lazy.

Anyway, I think my question is if you called Manchester City 'Man City' but now call them 'City' why do you think this is and if it's something you haven't done consciously would you say the media erasing the suffix from most clubs apart from you know who for years is subconsciously altering how people refer to them, almost rebranding clubs? If you're old enough and have changed what you call certain football clubs then kids brought up with sky have no chance.

As I said it’s simply a matter of typing efficiency (laziness) for me with zero premeditated thought behind it, I just do, if I was writing (a dying art) I’d write Man City and I say Man City when/if speaking of them.

I agree that this is exactly what it is, yes.

Well aye. I mean of course popular media coverage is a factor here. For Sky, it's United and City. Personally I give no fucks over the latter as its irrelevant to me. The former pisses me off no end mind as I support Newcastle United.

And that's why I think sky and TNT/BT doing it is a bit insidious, there's absolutely no reason why they can't add the suffix on their graphics, it's a conscious decision to erase a club's name and the more they've done it throughout the years the more it's working.

I'll add that am not sure why this Wallsend lad is so bothered about it.

See my answer above, who the fuck are they to decide who gets their proper name put on their graphics?

Well they're not going anywhere anytime soon, are they? And they've been in the division since 2002, so just the 23 consecutive years.

So take your clipboard, turn it sideways, and jam it up your arse.

Me :)

Tbf I was brought up in a very Mancunian home, my mother was born in Levenshulme and was brought up in West Gorton and Ardwick Green. The first game of football I remember watching was the 1976 cup final ie "United" v Southampton, another memorable couple of games were the 1981 final ties ie  "city" v spurs...  that's just the way it was. Then my uncles and cousins were obviously all the same. But it didn't really rub off too much on me tbh . I seem to remember our old mate Stevie kicking off at Danny Simpson for calling man utd "United" when he played here but he's from Salford and had played for the fuckers too..

My point is obviously aimed at older people brought up around the NE with no Mancunian relatives. :good: Anyway, it bothers some people and it doesn't bother others but it's almost like a media led operation to erase clubs names including ours and I don't particularly like it.

I completely agree. In "United's" case it's been going on well before the advent of sky sports although sky made it completely acceptable from Motherwell to Market fucking Harborough :glare:

Proper Walter Mitty character, PL. Last I'd heard he was raised by jocks, now he's in the Royle family.
